dedicatet 2,4 ghz machine
Suse 8.1 Kernel: 2.4.20 gcc: 3.2
hlds 3.1.1.0 + Fix +Update
Ns 2.0 (without patch)
No Plugins
2,4 ghz Amd 512 ddr ram @ 100 Mbit
with 18 players on the ns server i have a cpu usage from 30 - 50 % (depends on the map),
but the pings are up to 30 - 50 more and a lot of players get choke and laggs....
Why?
It was the same problem with 3.1.1.1 (70 % cpu)

If you drop it to 16 players, do they still get high pings and high choke?

    What do you really have?

Go to DSL reports and find out what you have for bandwidth, it's not hugely accurate but it is closer then "100 mbit"

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2 DSL reports speed test 1, tests UL and DL
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97 DSL reports speed test 2, tests UL and DL

Or go to http://www.2wire.com/ and click on "Test your broadband speed" which tests DL only

Elusiv does not seem to be in the USA or North America judging from the times that he/she posts, so these tests may or may not be conclusive.

But for interest sake you really should find out what you have.

EG: I get 4210.5 Kbps download and 1340kbps upload on my connection.

    Its a dedicatet Server... @ 100 Mbit
My Max Download speed was 9 MB / s (thats enough...!!! / Upload the same...)

The Server is curenntly Running @ 16 players... the same problem...
When the server is full (but just 30 % cpu usage)

You using PingBooster, you should drop updaterate to 60 and it will fix your choke problem.. dont use sys_ticrate..

Remove all plugins and test server without plugins..

Yeah, I was having the same problem on my server.

Second of all. FOR ALL LINUX ADMINS AND WIN32 FOR THAT SORT. You don't need a lot of bandwith for a server. Approximately 5kbps down and up is used for each player(56kbps speed). So 20 players would use about 100 kbps up and down.

If you don't believe me then go download bwmon for linux. Just type bwmon in linux and download it. Use it and it will show you your bandwith usage, it was very helpful for me, it should be for you aswell.

kbps is kilobits per second. You need roughly 5 kilobytes per second for each player, or 40 kbps. 800-ish kbps for a 20-player server, as a very rough number. That's considered "a lot of bandwidth" for a residential upload speed. Line speeds are usually measured in bits per second, not bytes.

I told u what I meant in the post. Yes, hosting a server from home is very hard but not if you had a T1 line, which can basically host 15 servers that hold 20 players each without anything else running with no lag.

You still have your bits and bytes wrong. A T1 is 1.544 mbps (megabits per second). Assuming 5 kilobytes (40 kilobits) per second per player (I think NS averages 3-4, but we'll use 5 for this example), a T1 will hold about 40 players. It will not accommodate 15 servers with 20 players each.

I wish a T1 could hold 15 servers...I'd make a killing in the hosting business As it is, I avoid gameservers because the margin is so low (if you price competitively).

For me this problem seemed to pop up with the introduction of 2.0 and its patches since I could run a 1.04 server with a 20 player max and never have a problem (other than the entity issue). While bandwidth and hardware does play an important part for maxusers the server shouldnt jump from sub-100ms pings to 500+ms pings and start choaking up just because 2 more people joined. I'll run some usage tests and see what I can turn up.

idk i think 2 people could do that ez if your connection has reached its max. tryed it on some smaller server and the dif between 8-10 people was 600 ping

I wish people would stop overclocking their internet connections. They're not designed to run that fast, even with crazy mods like water cooling. All you're doing is voiding your warranty and decreasing the life expectancy of your connection.
