Big Server Vs. Little Server

<div class="IPBDescription">A possible all around balance problem.</div> Note : I'm saying this as an opinion, nothing should be changed.

Anyone ever play on a big server ( 30+ players ) and a little server ( ~12 players )? I have and the tendency goes that the aliens win almost always on the small server except in few instances with no chance on the human side. The point behind this is that the aliens on a small server have ~ 6 players on their side. In a 'normal' map the aliens can drop 6 rts. each alien then gains 1 resource every 5 seconds unless the humans within that amount of time destroy them.

Now, in a larger server of 30 people, it's 15 per side. The aliens then have enough to drop/take all 9 open rts which still leaves them 9/15 every 5 seconds. This is to the advantage of the humans.

In all the Marine wins I have seen, which is about 6 out of 100 (of 2.0x), they have been on the large servers. 2 have been due to horrible alien players though.

In other words, aliens have the advantage on small servers, marines have the advantage on big ones.

To 'balance' this game, one would have to have servers that are completely balanced in this way being around 20 players in total. 10 v 10. Finding 'balance' in this game is going to be hard if not impossible.

It's not unexpected. The res system wasn't designed to handle 15 player alien teams. I think I read somewhere that it was balanced based on 6 vs 6 or 8 vs 8. I remember it being lower then the 10 vs 10 that most servers seemed to have. I think it was due to the availibility of playtesters. They have lives outside of NS (the fiends!) and getting 20 together was more difficult then getting 12 or 16. There might have been some reference to CAL clan matches too, but that part's pretty fuzzy.

Marine tech definitly beats alien tech in large games. Upgrading weapons and armor is especially beneficial, since they're permanent and everybody gets them, so you're upgrading 15 people for the same price that it would cost to upgrade 6 or 8. But since aliens split res, if you only have 5 or 6 RTs, everyone's getting res at a trickle.

I know I don't play on anything larger then a 24 player server anymore.

It is hard for marines to win on 6 vs 6 game even in 2.04d, as long as you are playing on a pub server.

I think the most balanced team size is 8-10 players on one side.

    The bigger game than 10
