Game Crashes When Loading

Hey, I searched around but couldn't find anyone with this problem. I installed (and reinstalled) 2.01 and whatnot, and everytime I go to connect to a server, it runs by with the usual gibberish on the console screen, but when it goes to actually START the game, it crashes to the desktop, the color of the desktop is totally whacked, and then if I try to do anything else on my computer (AKA try to run Natural Selection again or Internet Explorer or anything else), the entire computer freezes up and I have to reset.

Anyone who knows what causes this and how to fix it, I would be most appreciative, because I really want to play this game again.

Thanks

Steve

maybe you should just install NS 2.0, because 2.01(d) is a server only update. You don't need it. Dunno if that's the Problem, but you can try it.

wey's right, you don't need 2.01, so reinstalling should help, and if it doesn't fix the problem, give us a more detailed description. Ah yes, I reinstalled using just 2.0, but still encounter the same problem. Very strange. As for my system specs, they are...

    1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon
GeForce 4 Ti4200 from Nvidia 64 MB DDR
    DSL Connection
    Windows ME
    Running in OpenGL
    Not running EAX
Using Halife retail to run it

hi im having exactly the same problem as you, my specs are: PIII 800Mhz
    327 MB RAM
    GeForce 2 MX200 &4 MB RAM
No sound since the drivers dont work anymore (had to change from ME to 98 due to replacement of hard drive as the drivers arent supplied for ME this lead to no workin sound since after last christmas)
Ns previously worked 1.04 but after formatting my "games" partition, some mods havent been working (NS and some others)

    any help is apreciated

I have the same problem with other hl mods (the specialists). But there the problem occurs only on some servers. Have you tried to connect do different servers?
And do you have the same problem when you run a lan server?

Yup, tried about 9 different servers. As for lan, negative, I haven't tried that, but I'll give it a shot right now.

Heh, go figure, it does it for LAN games too! What in the world could be causing this?

and a normal half-life game, or another mod works?

And you can try to reinstall Half-Life.

Ah ha, here we go, I figured it out. It wasnt set to Open GL on the config menu, so I did that, but it still wouldn't work until I reduced the resolution to 640x480. I'm not sure if this had to do with my monitor, my card, or the game itself as to why I have to reduce the resolution so much, but hey, it still looks like NS, and it works.

I can't believe this. It worked fine yesterday, now today it's decided to continue with the error once again! I have it set just like yesterday when it WORKED, now its back to its old habits....what in the world.

Maybe this will help...I get an error now when it crashes saying that FMOD.dll had an error.

    Any clues?

You may be running an older or binary-incompatible version of the FMOD.DLL from another mod's install. Delete or rename that fmod.dll in the root of your half-life directory, then reinstall NS to get a proper one.
