Elite is a common english word, roughly meaning the best of the best. The internet elite is self-explonatory. However, the internet elite have a code language, known as 1 3 3 7 =leet="elite". Basically you try to replace letters with numbers or symbols resembling the letter (thus 4=a, 3=e, `/=y, and so on). 1462 is l a g z IIRC. Correct me if I misunderstood something here.

No, not the internet elite. Real hackers have nothing to do with it. As far as I know, it was invented by crackers and warez kiddies to dodge filtering software designed to pick up reference to illegal software practises, and has been adopted by the gaming community. Lots of people consider it an annoyance, but many other (myself included) think it's hillarious and an acceptable aspect of gaming culture. A good example of the "elite"-gaming connection is Megatokyo

Didn't know that, but I can see that it makes more sense.

Right. That's just rubbish.

So, if I spell 'insane' like this: 'omdsmr' (all letters shifted right,) then it will become a popularly used abrv. for no particular reason?

And thanx for the complement JeeR.

Oh, and as for "elite" speak, it may be funny, but it's sad. Anyone who says:

"OMG |'|\/| sooooooo o\/\/nnnnnnning u!!!!!11111"

Is certainly not a respectable, intelligent, 'elite' player. They are ridiculously funny because they are simply so ridiculous.

TFC:Team Fortress Classic, you gots your differenct classes, and try and capture each other's flag
Day of Defeat: push flag capture, in WWII style gameplay.
The Specialists: ultimate (IMHO) DM style with realistic weaponry, do kung fu, bullet times, etc etc

DigitalPaintball:paintball in HL
BoxWars: yer in a warehouse, everyone is a box, there are lots of other inert boxes, try and destroy each other. it's much funner than it sounds.
Pirate Knights and Vikings: uhm.. self explanatory?
SnowWars: snowballs.. and stuff
HLBumperCars: bumper cars.. and.. uh.. HL?
HL Soccer (not sure the precise name, International Soccer or somesuch)
Vampire Slayer: vampires.. slayers.. spooky environments
The Opera: John Woo-esque style action (dead? or moved to HL2?)
Firearms: guns guns and more guns, lots of innovation
Front Line Force: more arcadey type squad action, push pull flags
Global Operations: like CS, i suppose
MonkeyStrike: ooo, monkeys!! and guns!!
MasterSword: HL only (i think) RPG
WormsHL: worms (or scorched earth if yer a tad older) style play in 3D!
DMClassic: HL that looks like good ol Quake 1 DM, good times
Vietnam mod (don't know the name)

i know i've played more.. can't think of them atm, iknow there are mods that have to do with Superheroes, Robotech (sp only), and a ton of SP horror stuff.

of course, check moddb.com for more info, or planethalflife's mod of the day feature
