Lerk Flying Into The Ceiling.

Am I wasting my ammo?
Can you shoot lerks when they fly into the ceiling? Way to often I find myself chasing down that pesky lerk outside 'rine spawn, hit him with a couple of bullets and he starts his retreat ( usually up, and what looks like, into the ceiling ), LMG clip finished, pull out pistol, empty that and by then he's gone.

Second to taking down an Onos with a shottie, killing that spore spamming lerk is to me the most gratifying kill as a 'rine.

I think this is something that has carried over from 1.0. Don't know if it's fixed or not. Onos hitboxes still suck!

IN the ceiling, or in a vent?

I find it difficult as well, but it hasn't happened enough times for me to really determine whether the hitboxes are screwy when the lerk is against the ceiling, or if i'm just having trouble hitting the lerk cause hes moving so fast.

Necrosis: When lerks just mash the jump key they appear to go partway INTO the ceiling, and that may be obscuring their hitboxes.

    Also don't forget that:

1)Lerks move fast, faster than normal skulks.

2)Lerks are a much smaller target against a tall celing.

When you consider that they are a moving target, and the spread of the LMG, those lerks can be tough to hit no matter what your skillz are.

The best bet you have is probably the pistol. It's 100% accurate, and deals quite a bit of damage to the weak Lerk.

It still takes some practice to get your aim down, but once you've got it Lerks will go down in 3-4 upgraded pistol shots.

If you pop the Lerk model into a model viewer you will notice that the flying animation is offset vertically from the walking animation (too bad the takeoff/landing/crash animations [edit]don't[/edit] play in game, they're cool). So yes, the flying Lerk will do fun things like flying mostly into the ceiling, and through the tops of doorways.

The model hit boxes should be mostly screened by the ceiling, but the bounding box is in the correct place below the ceiling. I think NS uses the bounding box for hit detection rather than the model hit boxes, but wouldn't swear by it.

I haven't seen this on the servers, to be honest, but I do know that to kill lerks you need to aim for the pudgy body, not the wings or head.

So as long as you can see that, you're happy.

If you look @ the model in HLMV, you'll notice that the hitboxes contain every part of the model except for the wing membranes. The bony structures in the wings actually take damage. Not that you'll want to aim for them, considering their size. Yes, aim for the body, it's the largest part .

The lerk seems to be sheilded by the ceiling on some occations, it doesn't seem to work well everywhere though (map bugged?), I have tried standing directly under one emptying an entire lmg-clip into him without scoring a single hit (well at least there was no blodsplatter and he didn't die).

Its just small and fast moving.

Much easier to kill them when theyre grounded and not expecting you, they instantly try to take off and run, and if you can catch them by surprise, 90% of the time you should kill them in one lmg clip.

Actually, this is misleading. As has been mentioned many times, those hitboxes in the viewer are not used for weapon hit detection. The hittable area is a single cuboid in roughly the center of the body. IIRC, no part of the wings is hittable.

Do a search for "hulls" and you'll find more info than you ever wanted to know.

wait until the lerk flaps down? if he cant be hit, wait until hes hitable...they dont take much if theyve been hit already...

However with an adrenaline lerk, they're never coming down.
