Lerk Flying Directions

<div class="IPBDescription">down?</div> i've noticed that you can fly in every single direction as a lerk except down? Why?

More often then not I sometimes flap a few too many times, and I find myself helplessly hovering over a doorway that I was trying to get into. If I look down and try to fly, I fly back up again, so I have to gently float down to get under the door i just barely missed...while a marine with a pistol is coming up behind me.

I guess i dont understand why lerks cant "swoop" down or make decents quickly...it seems like they should be able to if they can go in every other direction so quickly...oh well, discuss =)

    Whats to discuss?
No one likes how lerks fly, and everyone wishes they could dive to get under that damned doorway before the HA deathsquad arrives and pastes your slimey little wings all over the doorframe. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

what do you want from the poor birdie, it can't fly down. nobody's perfect <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

..maybe if Duck key was implemented for faster descent?

I don't know...they seem to fall pretty quick after getting a shotgun burst at point blank

    mruhahaha

I just got one today, the poor thing. I almost felt sorry for it. I spawn and get heavy armor and shotty. It spits spores at me. I start walking towards it. It spits more spores. I get up to it, it drops spores on the ground and starts to retreat.

    BAM

    dead lerk <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Agreed. For the 5th?6th? time <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Personally I like the way the lerk flys as it is, with the exception of descent.

I believe this has been discussed numerous times but I'm still hoping someday we can hold our duck key and make the lerk actually fly downward.

Of course...since the lerk has gotten a mere support role shoved in his beak, maybe we should be hiding our flying friends behind the "fighting" aliens.

How the lerk moves makes perfect sense.

Pressing Jump flaps its wings, and the movement directions glide in that direction. You can only glide down- which makes sense- you cant flap down.

But then what happens when they slip by and give chase to you and you hightail it only to run into the "doorframe <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->" for example.
Or I usually end up using a lerk as a pester unit to separate their units and cause chaos and end up running all the time and end up hitting a few high walls, so sure they may be support but just doesn't make them instantly the tail end of any battle.

To me, the lerk flight seems to be a moderate addition to the PM_Jump function in pm_shared.c.

Thus, you cannot fly down, since technically a lerk is flying through PM_Jump, and that moves you upward.

    Makes sense? :D

well a normal bird down can angle its wings down and accelerate in the downward motion...why that was never implemented for the lerk, i dont know. I was hoping to see that soon

Dude, it is hard to get the <!--emo&::lerk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/lerk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='lerk.gif'><!--endemo--> to turn down, it took them a while jus to get the <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> to turn on the walls, it may be a long time before this comes into play.

What happened to the idea about "lerk hanging on ceilings" like bats I used to hear about?

    oops a bit off topic...

The Lerk can only change its direction with a flap of its wings. Remember vector addition? That's how the Lerk flies. You start flying a certain direction and you change it by pressing a movement key during the flap. Changing your field of view doesn't change the direction you're flying/gliding in, nor do the movement keys without a wing flap. And it can't 'fly' up or down, although it can rise and fall accordingly.

Once you get the hang of it though, flying the Lerk is pretty fun. Try using just left and right strafe to fly very fast around corners.

    yeah.
crouch should make the lerk's wings raise up (like its death animation, sorta) and that will allow it to sorta glide down at a decent speed

    that would so own

I don't really have much to add, but I fully endorse a lerk descent manuever, like pressing crouch. It would make flying a lot less haphazard.

I never have problems just letting go of the jump key to drop fast, and then picking it up again to fly by.

But it doesn't drop fast ENOUGH. Besides, they still have to go all the way up from the wing flap and then SLOWLY start to drop.

Faster lerk descent /w the duck key. Please.

it got scrapped for 1.1, maybe in a next release

I dont understand why u need to descend faster then it already does, u shoudnt be flying so high then <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->, I never had problems with that anyhow

first, it might not be the space bar for everyone...its mouse2 for me

second, yes, I do NOT jump when i am trying to decend. Like i said, I gently fall down to my death =/

great idea, and everyone's for it. we need two things:

1: clarify the exact change proposed; do you want duck to make him fall, or maybe aiming down and flapping, what exactly is proposed?

2: phased to S&I where someone in a position of power can see and critique the idea.

dropping is slower for a lerk because its gravity rating is slightly lower than everything else. go to the secret room in the hera ready room and you'll float to the top and never get down

The entire flying system should be revamped, instead of having the jump move you into the air it should just give you a firm push in the direction you are facing. So to fly you have to face up a little, and flap, same for down. This also has the added effect of allowing the lerk to travel fast in a straight line across a room since hes not always getting stuck in the damn ceiling. It also avoids getting stuck on doorframes <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ive noticed that lerks tend to avoid fly whenever possible. Even if the flying system was 'fixed' it still takes quite a bit of energy to flap and most lerks just crawl around to conserve it.

But birds...err ...well lerks arent birds but they have wings, and can fly, so...

But birds can bank and stuff. They only flap a couple of times to get speed up, then they stear themselves without needed flapping, they glide. I hope the NS Dev Team can find something thats like that, although it would be extreamly hard.

Can I just point out that if this had been posted in the S&I forum, it would most likely have got 2 replies, then would have sunk amidst the "Pheromone replacement" threads.

<b>Warning: Long post offering advice on how to fly efficiently with a lerk</b>

NS's lerk flight model is certainly distinctive...

It seems to carry many of the advantages and disadvantages of a traditional helicopter's flight model, in that you have a highly flexible movement system which unfortunately can make you more vulnerable to attack due to your low velocity, and how complex it can be to achieve efficient energy usage...

The problem isn't that the lerk is slow, it's just that it's incredibly easy to fly it inefficiently, with many players misjudging the effect of each flap and/or trying to change directions too quickly for the speed they are travelling at. However that then brings up an issue with map sizes, seeing as experienced lerks need to reach a good compromise between flying slow enough that they can turn sharp corners without sacrificing too much speed, and yet they need to fly fast enough to stay out of the enemy's sights.

Try to fly extremely slowly in a large area of a map (like in the outside area on Hera, or on any part of Castlewars). Once you found a nice slow stable flying speed, starting trying to turn slowly, and with enough practise you'll realise that with different combinations of movements keys along with facing in the right directions at the right times, you can turn quite sharply and maintain a constant flying speed.

Keep practising it, slowly increasing your speed as you do, and you'll notice that your "efficient" turning circle gets larger and larger, and that when you start trying to perform the turn too quickly, you'll basically be spending more and more of each flap slowing you down rather than actually changing directions. When attempting to make straight right angles turns (rather than slow curves), you'll notice that you basically have to stop ALL forward movement before heading off in your new direction.

All this is a lot to take in when you are reading it in a forum, and believe me it's even harder to cope with ingame when the adrenaline is pumping and you are starting to panic as you realise that the onos, 2 fades and the gorge you were with are all lying dead at the feet of these 5 loud metallic monsters and you can start to feel their hungry eyes starting to stare at your soft and easily damaged skin... It's unfortunate that every single muscle in your body tells you at this point that you need to flap your tiny little wings as fast as your poor heart can possibly manage in order to escape certain doom, as that will only serve to slow you down more than you'd think.

How does this relate to the doorway problem? Well once you finally learn to flying level, you'll very rarely find yourself going above the height of a normal doorway unless you actually want to for strategic reason. You shouldn't find yourself somehow trying to take off and instantly getting above door height after 3 flaps like many inexperienced lerks (or like experienced ones who are prone to panic when in danger, like me) do...

It's counter-intuitive at first, but once you get around it, and you train yourself to react differently to the panic, it starts to make more and more sense, until you get to the point that any other system just simply wouldn't work as well as the one you've come to know and love...
