How To Take Down The Onos

it's rather easy
Hello all,

as 2.0 has came out we have noticed an increasing trend, that is the onos that comes and rapes everything, a simple and devious tactic has been developed that can easily thwack the offending onos down

mines

if you can get a pack of mines, go to a chokepoint in your base (somewhere the onos is assured to run) and then look down, don't move and place all the mines on top of each other. Now you have your anti onos trap, it looks like one mine if done correctly, but in reality is five, the onos will run over it and will take massive damage, usually the onos player will notice the sever damge done and begin to flee, if you give chase and empty a LMG clip into him, then switch to your pistol and empty that, you can usually kill the onos with your last three pistol bullets, if you have teamates shooting at the onos, or upgrades, or *both* then your are sitting pretty. One pack of mines stacked on top of each other will also kill a fade, hands down, and two packs of mine stacked on each other will kill an onos hands down.

You have to watch out for the gorge as bile bomb will destroy the mines, but this is usefull for countering the early fade or onos, and for taking down an onos or three at endgame.

Also if you have established this tactic and killed several high level aliens in the game you can then simple place a single mine at a chokepoint, and the onos or fade will most likely stay clear of that for fear of being killed by the "stack" of mines.

If your using the one mine pack stack to kill a fade, simple set the mines in a open spot in your base, and then wait for the fade to come, and what you want to do is keep the mines in front of the fade and in front of you, and circle strafe around the mines, always trying to keep you, the mines and the fade in a imaginary straight line, sooner or later the fade will run over the mine as it attempts to claw you, you will probably die in the blast, but a vanilla marines and 10 res is well worth it to take down the 52 res that they spent on the fade (assuming upgrades)

also, when it comes to owning higher evolutions, lvl3 three weapons, and shotguns coupled with the one mine pack stack will keep your base pretty well safe from the bigger critters

well enjoy

Mines are good......as long as your team know they're there and can exploit their use.

Be very very wary of a gorge bilebombing a stack of mines near your men. As gorge I found an armory/IP group with mines all round. One bilebomb, one bunch of dead bodies.

Works great or not at all (or actually hurts you, if unlucky). I still prefer to just drop shotties.

    Too expensive, too easily countered.

Used this trick yesterday at my com's request, first time it exploded prematurely (I think there was a loose skulk) and blew up the whole team. Second time it took down an Onos, so it does work in theory...

there is another anti- method, it's called CONCENTRATED FIREPOWER. While one level 3 LMG alone will just dent the onos, 7 or 8 LMGs trained on a single onos WILL indeed hurt, and if you have HMGs, shotties and GLs, even better. It will either force a quick redemption, or a quick death. This is especailly good if your team is spread out (so the onos can't stomp you all) or if the onos is in the middle-end of the cooridor, and you are on the other end (even though stomp has one heck of a range.)

A "field officer" did this with us a number of times, we killed a few regeneration onos in short order by simply camping them out with 7-8 LMGs trained on that doorway. They walked though, they either redempted, retreated, or died.

Oni mine traps are extremely productive, if used correctly, and if they're not expected. Example in point:

We were sieging tram, AGAIN, and the same three annoying oni as earlier were again expected to come break up our party (had four heavies). However, I gave one of my lights there (they had an armory) 3 packs of mines, and told him to plant them in two packs of 6 and a pack of 3 further behind. We blew up two onos and redeemed the third, for thirty res, buying us enough time to take down tram and knock 'em down to 1 hive, long term result being a win.

However, don't rely on it too much... They learn pretty fast, and all that res can be wasted by a single skulk.

This is a good strat, but should only be used once in a while (in the same game) The aliens will most likely learn from there mistakes. I would use this at the begging of a match and near endgame, when they would have forgotten.

Place your mines well or they'll only get skulks.

We had a rine team spam mines when two skulks were outside base and just warned the whole team.

Generally now (on intelligent servers) you'll see an initial skulk scouting party before the Onos storm in very shortly after. The skulks case the room, det mines, and the Onos comes in once the coast's clear.

Id rather spend my res on a comm chair.

I'd rather spend my money on 3 shotties... Mines are good, and useful in thier own right, but 10 res per pack? that's an awuful lot of res to dump into mines. I only ever use mines in 1 situation. When there's some place under heavy attack, and all my marines have shotties or better. (cause then they'll actually do damage)

Yes, mines *might* work, but you just can't afford to lay down 20 res in a one-use defense. IF it's just one pack, then the onos will just run away to heal. If you have marines in the base to chase it down, why aren't you giving him a better weapon? or HA?

IMHO it's way too expensive unless your sure it'll do it's damage without the alien running away to heal. All I see mines as are expensive deterrents.

Conclusion? use the tried and true method, the shottie.
