<div class="IPBDescription">Colouring of Mart's kharaa picture thing</div> Well, I was bored, and I needed to practice my colouring, so I asked Mart if I could colour his "ratskulk" thing. And here it is. To date I think this is one of my best colourings. Ever.

I went for a cell shaded look <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Mart's current progress in his colouring (to compare styles <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->)

    Well, maybe because I don't like cell shading? =/

    i prefer Marts Coloring - beast yours looks kinda empty.. and why have you made a small line of light shading around the eye ?
    - to me it looks off. I think you'd get some better results if you add the lines on the tail and the other similar stuff...

    At that point I kinda gave up, as I lacked knowledge of how to do it. This is only my 4th ever photoshop colouring, so cut me a little slack guys, I'm a photoshop nub :/ So of course Mart's will be better than mine.
    Anyway, any more feedback on my pic? (what I did wrong/right)

    I use Paint Shop Pro, many others would consider that that automatically makes me a nub. But whatever, personal preference.

    Beast, it's a decent start. One thing you need to do is pick your light source, and be consistant with your light and shadow. A commonly used and fairly simple light source to use is from the upper left. That means that you'll color the whole thing solid, then add highlights to the top and left sides of things, and shadows to the underside and right side. Imagine whatever you're looking at in 3D, and where light would and wouldn't hit.

    Take the eye, for instance. The top of the brow is obviously in the light, so it gets a highlight. The underside of the brow, just above the eyeball, will be dark, since the brow overhangs the eye socket slightly. Finally, the cheek bulges back out, so you'll have another highlight on that.

    Take the time to get your shadows and highlights smooth, and conforming to the musculature of the creature. Just because it's cel-shaded doesn't mean it lacks detail; it means you have to be all the more careful with the detail you DO add, because you are using less definition to convey as much detail as possible.

    Take a look <a href='http://www.princeton.edu/~danj/vintage' target='_blank'>here</a> for some of my line art; feel free to grab one and try your hand at coloring it (that goes for anyone; just credit me if you show it off somewhere). I might specifically recommend these as clean, fairly simple but interesting outlines to try:
    <a href='http://www.princeton.edu/~danj/vintage/elder.jpg' target='_blank'>elder</a>
    <a href='http://www.princeton.edu/~danj/vintage/fblackops.jpg' target='_blank'>(Nightwatch) female black-ops</a>
    <a href='http://www.princeton.edu/~danj/vintage/fmilsec.jpg' target='_blank'>(Nightwatch) female military security</a>
    <a href='http://www.princeton.edu/~danj/vintage/sprite.jpg' target='_blank'>"sprite"</a>

    Thanks for the help coil. I was going for the "evil underlit" look in teh shading, hense the lighting is coming from underneeth the ratskulk, which i think, looks quite dramatic/cool. I could do better now with experience, but it's a case of finding somethign I am willing to colour again.

    If anyone else has some advice I would be very thankfull <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I have a line drawing I did of Eva01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you really want I'll scan it in so you can colour it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I also have a source pic so you can see the lighting/colours.

    Sorry for this 3rd post. But if you don't want to colour it don't... Feel free to shout "ARGHHHHH wth is that? It makes no sense at all!!"

    I just posted it as an option and I would understand if it looks too daunting to colour <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It's allready been coloured. I will only colour a drawing if it lacks colour :o Personal choice, but hey <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Still looks very cool though. Allthough the "ARGHHHHH wth is that? It makes no sense at all!!" Thing does apply :o
