Radeon 9500 Or Geforce 5600
<div class="IPBDescription">Last GFX card post from me... probably</div> O.k, its come down it it. There are 3 graphics cards on sale, and I intend to buy one of them, but which one?
Firstly I am buying off ebay. Yes I know, ebay bad... but it's not you taking the risk so <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> (although there is the old saying that the cheap person pays twice; once for the graphics card that breaks straight out of the box, and once for the good graphics card he should have bought in the first place)
The first one is a "Sapphire Radeon 9500 PRO", a great card, from what I hear, and this is the one I intend to get if at all possible.
The second is a Geforce 5600, there are 2 of these atm, and they are both currently going for cheaper. I also hear the Geforce is slower than a 9500 pro, but <i>just</i> faster than a 9500 128mb.
The third is a Radeon 9500 128mb. This is slower than both of the other's, and is going for slightly more, but there are more of them, so i'm pretty much guaranteed one if I can't get the others.
So that is the choice I have to make. I wanted to post this to get your opinions about:
1. Is the Geforce 5600 going to be unreliable in any way (some guy posted that it isn't backwards compatible)
2. Is it worth waiting for another 9500 pro if I can't get this one?
3. Which is better, the 9500, or the geforce 5600? Please don't start an NVidea vs ATI flamewar, I want opinions from people who have USED the cards.
Thank you, I promise this is the last of my graphics card-related threads.
Probably.
I might have to start one when I actually install the card, either to say I totally borked it, or it works great. I better follow the "How to destroy your computer" thread to the letter <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Any tips on graphics cards, or do I basically just take the old one out, put the new one in, and feed it the drivers when it asks for them like I did with my network card?
*edit* ooh, or I could get a 9700 (non pro) for ?50 more, but I don't think it's that much faster to justify the extra ?50 tbh. *edit*

htf is that supposed to work anyway? hmm? a gfx card will only render wonderful 3d enviroments, it isn't going to say "oooh, a half-life polygon, **** this".....
nvidia wouldn't make any sales....
anyway, I'm nvidia biased ... GO NVIDIA !!
Yay for bidding on things at the last minute, making all the bids for the last 10 days meaningless <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
*edit* Oh thats the other thing, what sort of machine will I need in order for it not to grind my system to a halt with it's superiority? I have a 1.5 with 384mb ram*edit*
They have programs that can monitor an auction and bid in the last few seconds. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Uh what the crap are you talking about? Not once in his post did he ever say anything about playing older games. And quite frankly I'm getting tired of reading posts from you because thats all you do. Start complaining about things in messages which don't exist, and flame people. And you could at least provide backup for your support of the nvidia card. Look at benchmarks, the 9500 Pro is way above the competetion.
Yeah I know, I just have to hope no-one's using that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
*edit* Aaaargh! Now i've found a 9700 pro for the same as the 9500 128mb, damn you complications! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> *edit*
Personally I'd use both then use your preferance. I'm still using a Ti4200 128. It works fine for me, nVidias drivers are great
I see ATI users using old dated drivers for compatability, to an extent
I'm neutral but I'd go with the nVidia for the drivers sake.
well if it isn't mister intolerance.
if you'd read my post you'd see the word "BIAS", which means I'm not a neutral party in this "debate".
he asked for an opinion, I gave him one. mission completed.

you like to instigate flame wars, please stop

Well, the last few Catalyst releases have been great and cause no problems for me. I'd still recommend the Omega Drivers. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Search Google.

THAT WAS AGES AGO!!!! Everyone still thinks that ATI has "Driver Issues". THAT WAS IN 1956!!!
However, DO remember to remove the nVidia drivers *before* you remove the old card, or they can leave behind crud that can cause problems (such as games seeing the remnants and opting for the nVidiot pipeline rather than checking further to find your ATI card... purely a programming error, and in no part caused by the Catalysts).
In addition, he was asking which of the cards performed better, not which bias you may or may not have. That is the R9500 Pro.
But there is nothing debilitating with the 5600 either, not a bad card.
Well I have an ATI card already (R7000), so that shouldn't be a problem.
I saw it going for £20 on the net... £20?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> My god it must be old <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
What some of you are getting confused with is that there are TWO types of R9500, the 128mb, and the pro version. Although the 9500 pro, while faster, is still 128mb.... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
The 128mb is <i>slightly</i> slower than the 5600, the 9500 pro is significantly faster.
Kthxbye. <--- I like using Kthxbye <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
P.s, Nvidiot! Ahaahaahaa!
If you do you will (hopefully) see a sudden drop in prices of the FX5900/Radeon 9800 as ATi/NVidia release their "next generation cards". I sense a greater price drop with the NVidia card if NVidia actually have any sense (the FX5900 is currently about £100/$100 more than the radeon...), and seeing as the two cards are more or less the same power (overall, I mean, what's an extra 20fps when both cards are running above 20032480Fps (ok I'm being a bit OTT)?) I sense an imminent price-war between them, allthough it seems for the moment the prices for the FX5900 are going like a seesaw (went as low as £360, then as high as £420, then back to £400...??er??), So I have no idea on which will really end up being the cheaper card...
As for the radeon 9500 vs 5600 thing, go for the 9500 pro as it can be overclocked or something to make it a "9700 pro". Don't get me wrong, the 5600 is still a good card, I just feel that in your case the 9500 would be the better option (the overclocking thingy). Plus I think it looks shinier so thats also a bonus.
