Consider yourselves lucky you were able to install it at all, mine just got to "converting HL to steam cache" and did absolutely nothing for 2 hours but eat my memory, till I finally canceled it and then quit (of course, I had to end task because it froze soon after I canceled), and when started it up again it told me it had to download HL, no sir, 480mbs on 56k? I think not. I <i>really</i> wanted to like Steam, despite how much the beta's sucked, but this is <i>worse</i> than the beta, much worse.
I'm installing atm, and yes it does take a long time, but I think it will be worth it.
hint: The icon in the tasktray changes when steam is updating, its got some dotted lines going into a small logo, wait until this has finished, and then check the game you wish to plays properties to see if its updated, if not, select autoupdate and run again.
hint2: steam may need to be run in compatiblity mode (windows 98/ME) when running steam under windows XP
I've been reading up on it and following it over the last few months. I remember on CSNation (I'm sorry!) a Valve/Steam representative was saying how Steam was "A waste of time".
Another thing to play on LAN (or with bots w/ CS1.6) you need to be online!?! Doesn't that defeat the purpose of LAN/Bots (unless ur on 56k like me <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )
*Sigh* Why are they doing this? To "sell" games over Steam? Not likely. I'm not gonna wait for years on end to download a game through Steam when they're selling it at the stores anyway. What do you have to show for yourself if you dl a game over Steam (and pay)? A screenname and password? I'd rather get my boxed, CD w/ manual from the shops.
Btw, when you dl a game from steam, it deletes the cache file after installation, so if you need to reinstall something (we all know how often we have to do that with HL), you gotta dl half a gig again.
Plenty more to add, but i cbf adding it, and im sure you cbf readin' it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Steam refused to work, I uninstalled, reinstalled, now I can't actually convert the game and mods which are all still on my drive sitting in C:\Half-Life\ So the solution, rather than there being an import function in Steam, I have to download ~500MB of Half-Life regardless of owning the CD and it already being installed, then re-download all the mods which are all waiting on my hard drive. Yes, on 56k this will be so much fun.
I know there is an import fuction during the registration process, but once you have registered (or in my case, Steam crashed during registration) there seems to be no way to import the games again short of downloading them all again.
Ooooooh, so instead of downloading ~1GB+ of data I already have on 56k I only have to download ~500MB of data that I already have. That's alright then!

This just in! You can convert everything again by creating a new account! Logout in the settings menu, the only problem is that your steamID will be way higher, and as we all know, the lower your steamID is, the larger your nuts, <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> but you can solve that by converting everything, then moving all the stuff to your first account.

Steam should be steamed to death!
and this is what i think summerises all the bugs in steam "Its not a bug, its a Feature!" --Valve (note: this is made up)
glad I never DLed steam, i'll wait till things clear up before I do.
Same problem here, whilst it was converting Half-Life and mods to steam, it crashed. Steam refused to work, I uninstalled, reinstalled, now I can't actually convert the game and mods which are all still on my drive sitting in C:\Half-Life\
So the solution, rather than there being an import function in Steam, I have to download ~500MB of Half-Life regardless of owning the CD and it already being installed, then re-download all the mods which are all waiting on my hard drive. Yes, on 56k this will be so much fun.
I know there is an import fuction during the registration process, but once you have registered (or in my case, Steam crashed during registration) there seems to be no way to import the games again short of downloading them all again.
