It's time to decide, once and for all
It's time to decide once and for all on what to call the noname/mother hive in ns_nancy.
If you dont feel like reading, scroll to the bottom and read the last three paragraphs to see the abridged version of this post.
For the people who only know of 2.0, there was once a map called nancy, it had a hive called mother. In the patches after the 1.0 release, the naming got b0rked and it wound up with no name.
Originally the hive was called Mother. It later became popularily known as noname, or nameless or unnamed hive.
Now, anyone who's been keeping track of the Nancy remake project in the mapping forum would know that the people involved in the project are nearing completion.
Should the hive be called Noname, as it has been for most of the pubbing oldschoolers of NS?
Should it be called Mother hive, as most of the PT's and a few others have argued?
There are pros and cons to both names.
Noname and all it's derivatives is a community given name to compensate for a lack of name being attached to the hive. It is the name that the broad community have given to the hive, and it is the name that everyone knows it to be.
However, it is argued by some that noname is going against the wishes of the mapper, and that it lacks that certain feeling.
Mother hive was what the original mapper, Devildog, wished to call call it. A simple mistake left it without a name and lead to it being called noname. People whom support Mother hive's original name argue that it is probably the mappers wishes that Mother hive be called that to align with the mappers original intentions.
It is counter argued that Mother Hive would be continually confused with Mother Interface, a section that was on the other end of the map.
In my opinion, both sides have valid arguments, and both sides have a right to call the hive their respectful names.
However, this does not solve the argument.
There is an old saying. "When you come to a fork in the road, go down the third path"
In this case, the third option is to rename the hive outright and solve the problem.
My personal proposal would be to rename mother/noname to "Unknown Hive" which adds mystery, charecter and a unique name, but I would like to know what the community thinks.
If you could rename Mother/noname, what would you call it?

But technically, its up to the map's creator.
mother
duh
poster A: OMG TEH MOTHER
poster B: SUYF NUB TEH NONAME
poster C: No, Mother!
poster D: I PERFER UNNAMED
ad infinitum, ad nausea
{Sigh}
In the 1.0 and later versions of ns_nancy, when someone referred to "Mother" on a public server, it would most often be "Mother Interface" outside the Subspace hive. I, for one, would probably be pretty confused, if it would now suddenly refer to Noname hive. I know it was how it was originally intended, but I fear that the power of habit is pretty strong.
Furthermore I think that "Noname" actually is rather atmospheric. It gives a feel for the hivemind, where there is no individual that is important in itself, only the collective. Names are only necessary to distinct individually significant entities, and as such, the kharaa do not refer to each other, nor their nodes with names. For the players it is impractical to not name the hives for easy reference, but calling the hive Noname, is a way to reflect the inherent anonymity of the induvidual entities in a collective hivemind.
Mother just sounds lame.
...
Suddenly when I look at Mother it reminds me of Moth, and Er...
Reason being, it's faster to say over the comm: "Get to Mother" vs.
"Get to Mother Interface" or "Get to Mother Hive"
It's just in general easier to have distinctive names.
It has always been called this in the past, and as you say may add to the mystery and/or atmosphere. But it was called that simply because it had no name; it was unnamed. If you actually give it the name/label of "Noname," it becomes a bit nonsensical. Places on the map are named according to their function, location, etc. Equilibrium Regulation hive was named because, well, there's a hive location in Equilibrium Regulation. Naming the hive "Noname" would mean that there was a hive in the part of the ship/base named Noname. Doesn't make sense.
I would rather leave the name blank, like it was. Nancy was remade for nostalgia's sake. The hive with no name was part of that nostalgia.
I've already made a case for not naming it Noname.
If you refuse to leave it blank to save confusion, name it Mother, or something else that makes sense. Although really, all of us who played NS pre-2.0 managed to figure out what noname was without too much trouble. Are the people who've played since 2.0 really that 'challenged' that they will be stupified by a hive with no name?
Best case: Leave the name blank for sake of nostalgia, and atmosphere.
Second best: Give it a name that makes sense, such as Mother, or something else.
Worst case scenario: Name it "Noname" or "Unnamed."
I would like to see the middle part, were the hive is, being called " " while the 8 parts around it have all the other names.
Its worth that 8 more entities to have sensseless discussions on and on.
"srop a phasegate in noname!"
"no, not in mother, in noname!!!"
or call it "Ollj" Hive, i would like that.
Yeah, I'm kidding.
so mother hive will be "MH"
It's a map, after all, and not an unnamed work of Shakespeare. If the original author's wish is really the determining factor, that author should be contacted and questioned on his preference. If he doesn't care, nor should anyone else. If he can't be contacted, come up with a new name for the thing and be done with it.
If someone told you that naming "Window" a "Window" is mistake, original idea was to name it "hovaring see-through-door" would you stop calling it "Window"?
