Anyone got it to work?
I tried to tell it to port over steam when I first installed, but it only moved over my "official mods" . So... anyone got it to work?

Nope

The thing I did was to move the NS folder over....but then again....it still won't load (stuck after saying Preparing to load Half-life...)

at first it did an autodetect for me, but i had to reinstall it. And now i can't get it to autodetect mods again.

now i tried the auto conversion three times... and all it did was adding a 'platform' folder to my old HL install folder that's it... no sign of any mod in steam... nor could i manually add the ns files to steam...

does any NS dev has an idea of there will be some kind of steam hl-sdk or some tools to get old mods into steam working or did valve let them stood alone in the cold too?

my understanding was there was going to be extra coding involved for the mods to work with steam, but hey, critical says his works.......

It works for me as well. Beyond graphical problems, TFs and RTs immediately electrify upon building completion. LOL. (even HMGs glow)

To install NS manually, I believe you can just put NS in this folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\name@email.com\half-life

tried that too but that raises several problems

1. how to start it ... there is no MODS menu in the steam HL
2. when you start it from the command line "hl.exe -game NS" while steam is loaded (i think otherwise first steam startsup anyway) then i get a dll error msg...
3. starting it via ASE results in the same problem...

i just installed steam, and it asked if i wanted to include NS as well in the steam converting, and i did so.

right now im stuck updating Half life and Counter-strike before i can play NS,
(yes NS comes up in the list of games)
does anyone know how FRIGGING long it takes to update cs and hf? ive been waiting here for 30 mins, (for CS alone) dling at 200kb a sec..

Note, that's kiloBITs, not kiloBYTEs. And at around 100MB or so for the HL patch, and however much (I think it said about 80) for the CS patch... lessee.

Roughly two hours, at that speed, assuming only 180MB and at 200kbps the entire time.

Which is particularly annoying, given that I'm only getting around 50.

In any case, this would have been better posted in the thread asking about it, so I'm going to see if I can merge it in after this post.
(edit) Woo! It worked! Bluish's previous post and my current one are from the merged-in topic. (/edit)

You should have gotten an option to allow ns to be moved to the steam folder when you first ran the installation, after that all you do is click on half life under "my games" and wait for it to update. Then click on the natural selection icon under "third party games" and join a server. There are only 16 servers right now and half of them drop you when you join a team, also marine and alien menus look horrible as do the fonts.

My problem is, is that it won't update my Half-Life. I go into options, and tell it to update automatically, but it just won't. Making me mad

if the ns dev team releases ns updates on steam, will they be leaving the normal way of updating to ?.

if not, then ns WILL die.

I thought that with NS just the servers need patch updates, right?

been there, did that

three times and it never worked... and there is yet no info on how to do that automatically...

tho would be nice if you could tell us what the directory structure would be like and maybe you can find where it is stored that a 3rd party mod is installed....

i hope it's not in the ClientRegistry.blob because that is blobby and i doubt there are yet tools to read or modify those...
btw is there an extra ns.gcf or is some of the ns files in the half-life.gcf or all of it as it was before?

would be nice to get some infos together maybe we can find a way to install it manually

*Phased* to Off-Topic, as it's a valid question which many apparently are having difficulty with.

Well my ns folder is now in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\(my email)\half-life\ns

Try copying your ns folder there and see what happens

I do that and it then goes and creates a new folder "ns-zone". Then the steam browser won't find servers because ns-zone obviously isn't a mod.

Just use the 2.0 installer on C:/ProgramFiles/Steam/SteamApps/your@email.com/hl

good idea, does it work tho?
• JustusJonasJustusJonas Join Date: 2003-08-07 Member: 19173Members
i doubt that it works because the mod has to be entered into the ClientRegistry.blob... if you open it with an hexeditor you can find all the settings where what is installed and even some default command lines for the games.... and without an entry for the mod in this file you won't find it as '3rd party game' in steam
• PseudoKnightPseudoKnight Join Date: 2002-06-18 Member: 791Members
So, "3rd party games" auto-detection is broke? Worked for me. *shrug*

I've been in this business for 25 years. Both programming network applications and designing user interfaces. I've been involved in several major rollouts. (MOST successful heh heh) So you know where I'm coming from when I say this...

Valve scrood the pooch.

1) The interface is poorly designed.
.....a) It has the look of being thrown together while trying to look COOL and NEW.
.....b) Some controls are disabled with no explanation as to why.
.....c) Help is non-existent.
.....d) The interface often freezes for long periods of time. (Ever hear of multi-threading, guys?)
.....e) Error reporting is relegated to a log file and/or cryptic messages that pop up and make you panic with no suggestion for solving the problem. (I had to dig into the list server archives for a solution to "User's Ticket has Expired".)

2) Steam was poorly announced, poorly advertised, and poorly distributed. I only found out about it because I was checking Valve-ERC for some mapping tips. As such, I and everybody here are on the "bleeding" edge of things.

3) Talk about treating the mod community with utter disdain and a lack of respect. Not just the players, but the developers, too. How friggin difficult would it have been to have made sure mod migration went smoothly? Come on, Valve, these people have made you quite a few bucks by keeping Half-Life on the shelves. The incredible quality of Valve's Half-Life product is not to be denied but, unfortunately, that only goes so far. Half-Life is incredibly far beyond the normal life-cycle in sales and THE reason for that is the MOD community. Valve's wallets are fat because of them and I think they deserve a little respect.

Valve's products are normally to be greatly admired. But this one? Since I hate to say "NO" I'll just say, let's wait and see what they do to fix this mess.

So, for my part, I will keep trying to get Steam up, and say God Bless those Natural Selection developers. You are appreciated, whether you know it right now, or not.
