The point is , you <i>shouldnt</i> need a guide just to be able to get steam to work, and when it does work, its still rubbish.

Yeah, but when you have around 400,000 people downloading 400mb files from the same network, it might screw up a bit.

good job. It works.

But there's only one server that has people playing listed. Rest are empty. Can it reach the WON servers or no?
Or is it a software glitch.

the old steam only looked at steam clients, not won based ones, and as said before, WON.net is going down....

got a project going to make new won style servers to support hlds, screw broken steam...

I'm confused. Does this install guide assume I already have halflife installed? Because if it does, the instructions make no sense at all, considering Steam will remove your halflife folder as well as the NS folder in it. What the hell is in the bittorrent file I'm downloading?

Heres what I did. the FMOD thing confused me...

1. Get all the steam files.
2. Start a HL single player game to creat the c:\program files\steam\steamapps\EMAIL\half-life\ folder
3. put NS directory in there.

I don't have FMOD anywhere in my HL folder.

Ns works like totally better on steam than with old half-life! I used to get fps like 50-70, now its 80-99 !!

I used Catpoker's link to get it started, then finished with the 'copy NS folder and fmod.dll' and it worked. Only problem is LUNIXMONSTER ISN'T STEAMED YET.

This is the gamecontent that steam needs to run half-life.
THis is so you do not have to delete the old HL directory or copy anything :o

Oh dear jesus god, now it wont even connect me. I've restarted the pc and still wont work!

And when I close steam, It has this error about debugging!

I think a lot of the problems atm are due to the fact the Steam servers are way overloaded - you need to pretty much verify with the steam server that you are going to play x on y, and if you cant communicate with the server..then you pretty much won't be able to play the game :/
Something like that anyway.

it's pretty much the same thing, the steam servers are so lagged its difficult to do ANYTHING on steam.

Ok now I got natural selection showing up in a "third party games" section.

I don't know if I did it right, but seeing you said steamapps\email is like your HL folder, I decided to put NS in the Half-Life folder that was in it (like a mod) but at least it shows up.

Now I need to find a server. The search tool doesn't work as it filters as ns-game instead of ns. Or at least it doesn't show up anything for me. Any help?

Ok basically it will show up in the third part games, then right click and launch game. It will wait for Half-lIfe to start up. Once it has it will look like it is trying to play Half-Life, but this is just the menu for all third party mods.

Next click find servers and the ns filter automatically turns on.

well it shows up in third party, the filter shows ns-game instead of ns (can't be changed) and no servers show up on the list. When I try to create a server, I see HL's map list.

edit: and looking at the binds, it's HL's binds.

Well I jsut tested it, there is a slight problem. Some weird command spams the console like anything, I will find the fix then append my guide as needed <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

Is steam compatible for 56kers?

Its compatible, but not very friendly. You see there is a 500K steam installer, but In order to play NS you will need the other version. 388MB, so unless a friend on broadband or higher can put it onto CD for you be expected to have HOURS of downloaing.

Well I don't know how you did it but this here method didn't work for me.

When Natural Selection appears in third party games, launching it creates some ns-game thing. The way I did it is to edit the normal HL program (in My Games) and added -game ns in the command line. Worked with that.

Btw, alias "ex_maxerrordistance" "say fixed" might not be a good idea. As I understand it, it'll say fixed for each time it tries do do ex_maxerrordistance. Which means some unbelieavable spam <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>

Yes whoever follow the persons advice for the alias must of been pretty stupid. I mean common it must execute that command at least 100 times a second, wth would u bind it to say fixed!
