From talking with Cory 'Squeal Like a Pig' Strader (who is a professional game artist), this is a pretty big leap for them in the graphics department. His quote was '...more advanced then most games would ever need.'
Pretty interesting stuff. Sounds like TF2 or HL2 or whatever they're working on is going to be pretty cutting edge. Look here for info on the the actual tool.

Well, from reading about this software, it's more like movie-quality graphics than game-quality. Something you would use for a Doom3, perhaps. Makes you wonder why they need the extra horespower to the point where they are forced to ditch the older toolset...
Will those games EVER come out?

Is anyone else less worried about when it'll come out as opposed to how good a game it will be when it does? This change here signifies a big step up in the graphics department, for models at least, and I'm sure that their freshly coded game engine will be able to handle the geometry just as well. The only thing remaining is gameplay, and it's hard to judge that yet, though it is the most important factor of all. But I have no doubt that TF2/HL2/whatever will be just as fun to play, if not more fun, than HL itself. They wouldn't take this long and release a crappy game. They know what they're doing, and I'm not blaming them for taking a few extra years to make it as perfect as possible in every department. There's no lack of good games and mods out now, and when the next gen games come out (UT2K3, Doom 3, etc.), I'm sure Valve will be right up there with them.
Nice find.
(Oh, and thanks Greedo. Now I don't have to be the one to rant. The topic of valve never finishing their next game is getting kind of tiring, really. I really can't wait for it, it's going to be incredible. But only because of this long wait. )
