I scan weekly with adaware (for the spyware that likes to make pop-ups when you're not surfing the web), and pop-up stopper for when I AM surfing the web. I basically get 0 pop-ups

Hey nice swear filter dodge by the way! In my opinion the combination of Opera and using Ad-Aware regularly is perfect for zapping those pop-ups.

    <a href='http://www.opera.com/download/' target='_blank'>Opera</a>
    <a href='http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/' target='_blank'>Ad-Aware</a>

Mozilla Firebird blocks pop-ups as well, and is faster than Mozilla.

It's spyware. It sends the url of every page visited to google, this is probably a <a href='http://www.google-watch.org/jobad.html' target='_blank'>bad</a> <a href='http://www.google-watch.org/krane.html' target='_blank'>thing</a>, but it's obviously necessary to tell you the pagerank of a page.

there's a little program called <a href='http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=about' target='_blank'>spybot</a> that's a lot like AdAware, but has some additional features, like blocking tons and tons of ads on the 'net... popups included.

With google toolbar, doesn't it block some popups you WANT, too? like, for instance, in these forums, I thought when you click on a link and it opens it in a new window, google toolbar blocked the new window... but, yeah, google toolbar rox for searching, and run both AdAware and Spybot to make sure you nuke allll your spyware.

For those people that have a computer just sitting on the web and dont run any sort of firewall. Or even some fire walls. There is a rash of net send advertising right now. Really annoying and can popup over NS and serveral other games.

Temp solution start>run cmd.exe enter in "net stop messenger" It will say that it is stopping the service. Then that it is stopped. This is a temp solution. Note that "net start messenger" will start the service again if you need it.

A more permenate solution would be, on win xp start>run services.msc and look for messenger in the services list you can permenatly disable it or put it on manual. Then you could use the gui to start or stop it, or you can appear tech savy to your buds and enter in the command line version. Please note that some things need this to run corretly, some printers and ups systems need this command to send you information.

I do not know how to stop the service in 2k, dont need to know how, I hide behind a linux nat box <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Actually, from what I gather on their installation page, that's only if you use the advanced features like PageRank.
