An interesting stratigy is seige denial, if you can place seiges in enouph usefull places you can deny them all sorts of things that you wouldnt be able to defend. there is a map were you can seige the double res from rine start even if you cant get those res neither can they. if you can secure seige locations that can hit the hive, its just as good, if not beter than actualy having the hive, if they put it up, it goes down if a few scans. though you either need a patroler to scout the places, or fairly frequent scans of the areas.
Try to lockdown a hive ASAP. Get a second node then get the hive immedieatly. This restricts the aliens to two possible hive locations, and you can focus on either one. Early game shotguns allow you to lockdown one hive without much difficulty. Rushing the second one with shotguns 5 minutes (after the first one has been secured with 4-5 turrets) into the game does help, and at 10 res per shotgun it does not take long to set up a well-defended base. Even if the rush fails, the resource parachute generated by the low cost of the shotguns means a comeback is still possible. Just remember to get phase gates- even with meds marines wont live long when faced with spores.
A simple and efficient way to defend is to use a Guardian (or two/three) with the right equipment (mines/welder,hmg,jp against oni for example). Then tell him to watch the pg positions with his motion tracker and to teleport there if anything gets close. With a well outlayed def base he should stall or stop the enemy,if he gets to much incoming he can still scream for backup through the phase gates. A good example for this is ns_bast where a single (clever) marine with some turrets can easily hold engine hive, and a bit harder atmosphere, against 1 to 2 mid/high class aliens.
And give the defenders jps instead of HAs,they can hide if lerks come along but if they meet an oni with HA,on bad terrain,they are history and the outpost with them.
