Ati 9800 Pro Ns Bad Frame Rates

ATI 9800 Pro NS bad frame rates
Lo folks - thought I would run this one by you as its got me stumped.

I just upgraded from a geforce 2 ultra, that has served me faithfully for the last 3 and a half years, to a spanking new ati 9800 pro.

The problem is that whilst I'm used to maxing out on 100 fps with my geforce 2 ultra - now I only get between 5 and 25 fps with the ati card - both in directx and opengl.

I'm using the latest drivers and all other games (including cstrike mod) work flawlessly in silly resolutions. I've tried a re-install of NS although not half-life as of yet (why re-install when other mods work fine ?) and this failed to fix the problem. All ATI driver settings are at default except I do keep vga sync switched on (I hate texture tearing). I've tried with it off and it made no difference.

Since all other games work fine at silly resolutions I was hoping someone could shed some light on what might be happening. System is windows XP SP1 with all latest updates. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Anyone lese had ati ns problems ?

Regards

My ATi didn't work at first either.

I would check and MAKE SURE you have the latest Radeon Drivers, because a Driver Upgrade fixed my problem.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

yes I have (and have double/triple/quadruple checked that I have) the latest drivers. The problem is definately not fixed using them - the problem is only present in NS as far as I can tell.

For the record the ATI display driver version is 7.93-030812a1-010735c-ATI

did you fully uninstall your geforce drivers?

    Use the Detonator Remover thingy.
  • havenhaven Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8767Members
Yes, I went through add/remove applications and removed the drivers there - I didn't bother using the add/remove hardware wizard as it generally breaks things worse than just pulling the hardware out.

I'll send a copy of the drivers this evening or you can just download them from the ati site (link below).
    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-cataly...010735c-efg.exe

Also as an aside - decided to re-install my home system so I'll see if that helps fix things or not.

    Ta for the help

I had a radeon breifly and it did the same thing. My only guess is its relativley new technology, and well....half-life is relatively ancient

Yah Im on a 9800 pro and while I was used to 100fps on an old gf4 mx, on the new card my fps has plummeted.

Try Roobs guide above. I plan to take another look at it later.

Bottom line is the 9800 pro *should* have absolutely no issues running NS full on at 100fps.

hmmm i think im getting the same problem although i went from an ancient graphics card to the radeon, my fps use to be 30 and with this new one only went upto 40-45 using roobs guide ive got it running at 72 fps roughly as this is what my monitor runs at and anything else would just cause glitches. but in the heat of battle it still drops to 30ish.

what radeon are you guys ruinning cause there are several radeon 9800

mine is the gigabyte radeon 9800 256mb pro (voted best performance septembers pc gamer, i think it was but no need to brag lol)

i think my other problem is my processor though. im only using a 1.4 chip. i cant afford to upgrade yet.
but i have a gig of memory so that makes up for it slightly.

    Yah Im on a connect3d 9800 pro.

Also on a 1.4 amd chip as it happens and also with 1gig of ddrpc2100 ram. OS is XP home.

Gonna try upping all the setting on my card to the limit to see if it degrades fps any worse.

This is a known bug in ATI's drivers.

    See the following thread:

    http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?thr...readid=33691668

ATI doesn't seem willing/able to fix this bug, as they've known about it since 3.1, but haven't fixed it as of 3.7.

I also have been having problems lately.
    Specs:

    Xtasy GF4 ti 4600 128
    512mbs ram
    P3 866 MHz
    Windows 2000 pro

Before 2.0 I had my FPS maxed at 100 and it would drop to 70 at the lowest.
Now I am in mid 40s and it can spike to anything in the high 80s to the low 20s.
I have all the latest drivers
I know my comp isn't very good but that shouldn't cause these kinda problems.
Games where the GFX are intense cause me to hover in mid 20s.
Rainbow Six Raven Shield in particular gives me really bad FPS if I don't turn things to medium.

Man I need a new comp

Thanks for the heads up on that forum thread - very interesting reading (albeit a lot of posts to trawl through). The concensus seems to be either go back to the 3.2 catalyst drivers or move on from HL. It does appear to be an ati driver issue (this doesnt explain those with NVIDIA cards having problems though). I'm not sure which cards were out during catalyst 3.2 so I've no idea how well they are supported. Personally I guess I'll have to live with the problem until HL2 and then abandon HL1. Maybe ATI will fix the issue in the next catalyst drivers ... maybe ...

Its a waiting game unfortunately. Waiting for new drivers.

Ta to all those who posted, your comments/questions have all been very helpful.

    Regards

majin, I think your bottleneck is pretty much your processor, I got gf4 ti4800 (same speed practically) and getting 100 fps is no problem, so there is nothing wrong with the graph card, but I got amd athlon xp 1800+ @ 1,80GHz (not that good...) and THAT is the difference between us
also, from my experience windows 2k can't handle the games as well as xp for example, so maybe thats a part of the reason as well, but buying even a 1,8GHz processor would be cheaper

i have this problem too. i just got a 128mb 9600 pro to replace my aging vidcard and i get worse fps during firefights than with the old card. I got the card in anticipation of HL2 so i hope there are no compatibility problems with that, or i will be thoroughly ****

Ugh...I have this same problem...everybody kept saying how much better ATI was than nvidia and whatnot, but when I "upgraded" (more like downgraded so far as NS is concerned) from my geforce 2 MX to a radeon 9000, I lost about 50 fps. I can't quite figure out why either, and it gets slower with every new driver revision. On the other hand, the other mods go slightly faster than my old card.
