Valve are working hard on it, that’s what happened. HL was an incredible, evolutionary game and one that deserves more than a typical ‘bigger, better, more’ sequel.
It took them a long time to get HL right and will probably take a similar time to match, let alone surpass it.
Be patient.
And this should really have been posted in the Off-Topic forum.
I don't know if it's even possible to make a sequel for HL which is actually really better than HL. The mod programming is fine, the netcode neat. Well you only may do a better graphic engine, but then it probably won't run fluently in 1024 x 768.

There's probably no doubt that an HL 2 will come, but Valve never officially announced it. Keep your eyes open for the upcoming ECTS show. It is rumoured that HL 2 will be shown there. It's on on the Weekend on the 29th ant Earls Court, London I believe. As for TF 2, all is quiet on that front...

If i remember corretly from an article somewhere Valve handed the devlopment of Half-LIfe 2 over to another company to allow them to work on new stuff and support the communities mods ( CS, DOD, TFC etc ). Im guesting though that Valve will still be keeping a close eye on how Half-life 2 is progressing.

In this interview (I beleive gamespy asked the questions) they stated that there would be no way to surpass what Half-Life is. They feel that Half-Life is thier best work and that a Half-Life 2 would no be better. So instead, they are making a whole new engine and then making TF2.
Exactly, Half-LIfe 2 is Valves best work. They dont feel they could do better, but they know fans want a sequel hence handing over it another company to have a go.
Halflife 2 and Halflife the movie are just rumours! both have never been confirmed by valve...Valve even deny that they are working on the HL movie and HL2. no doubt however that they are working on a very l33t project. they changed 3d Modeler to a new program with zillions more options. for games like the ability to render Hairs!
and if HL2 releases i think its ha pretty high change it's backwards compatible with other mods
I saw a preview about Half-Life II along time ago, but then nothing...
The Half-Life engine ist too old, we need a new one -> or a lot of people go to UT2003 and Doom III
actually, In an interview on PHL I recall one of the valve team saying that they were considering making a HL2, but that was all they would say on it.
Also... TF2... supposedly a commander class to order your troops around like in a RTS came... sound familiar? er... NS IS TF2!!!!!
Actually, last I Heard valve scrapped their quake 2 engine that they were using for TF2 and started building a new engine up from scratch. That's when the blackout came on TF2 news... I'm hoping it'll be out in early 2004, that way I can have my doom3 fix (hopefull release date in late 2003, IIRC) and then get my TF2 injections.
They cant just skip half life II, there is just too much unanswered yet, what happened to Gordon freeman? Gman, who is he really? theres just too many questions left, so if their not making a HL II they better be making another expansion, or someone dies
I read an interview with the head guy at valve. They asked him a question about halflife 2 and the possibility. He responded, that he can't give any specifics but people are working on it and that it will definetly be coming.

Both are undoubtedly under development. Why would you not follow up the most acclaimed FPS game ever (HL), and the most imitated mod ever (TF)?
You guys really have no idea how tight Valve security is on stuff like this. They simply do not allow leaks until they want something known. It's kind of remarkable...
Is it just me, or has Half-Life basically become a gaming platform all it's own? I mean sure it's been out for 4 years and it's using a dated graphics engine, but thanks to Counter-Strike(come on, you have to give it some credit in this respect) and Valve's dedication to supporting the MOD community to later exploit their talent and make their games retail, Half Life has sort of become an alternative to buying a 200 dollar console. Sure, the graphics are dated, but compare any screen shot of Medal of Honor to a screenshot of Day of Defeat and you can't deny that DoD looks a billion times better, even if it lacks a lot of the special effects. Right now people can play a variety of different singleplayer games that are very little like the original game, there are World War II games, modern war games, counter terrorism games, futuristic war games(I'm starting to see a pattern here), but soon there will be racing games, and a personal favorite Marine Vs. Alien RTS/FPS combination. And most people agree that most of these games are a lot better than retail games out right now, and they're ALL free if you dish out a measly $20 for the original Half-Life which is fun itself still. Half-Life and it's extremely proffesional mods have risen well above your average mod community, it's no wonder that this is still by far the biggest online gaming community.
Half Life 2 is being worked on, that is a guarentee.
Think about it this way, the community is thinking HL2 will never be released, however in Valves production houses, they are deep into the game. Few weeks later, your in your local store or browsing the internet and you see "Half Life 2 Hath Cometh!".
You suddenly go a bit white... thinking its some sort of joke, then you realise that its true! HL2 has been shock released out of the unknown, no hype, nothing.. Just released.
You buy it instantly, reading the cover and book to see how amazing the game actually looks.. you install, lips are watering from sheer anticipation.
Imagine it
I personally think Valve have kept the lid shut on this, for my above statements purpose. There has been no hype whatsoever on HL2, let alone information on it. If it was to be released tommorow everyone would be shocked, it would cause more impact - As no-one would know what it would be like, until they bought it.
Thus less dissapointment if it wasn't good (Come on, how could it not be good? They have HL to base it on - Half Life with an engine comparable to Doom 3 would be the best game ever. Imagine NS, DoD or CS on this engine... I mean, they rule already because they have had to stress gameplay.. but imagine the graphics.
Oooh I've been rambling, sorry got a little excited there =]

Half-Life is honestly a console of it's own, although limited mostly to FPS games. If people make more stuff like HL Rally, and that one sidescrolling game I saw, and maybe a full RTS on the HL engine... Very sweet. Imagine making Counter-Strike or Firearms or DoD or FLF into an RTS, they'd all fit quite well with semi-intelligent bots.
IF there is a HL2 I sure as hell hope it's got nothing to do with Gordon Freeman. I liked the ambiguous ending to HL, leaves lots of questions that you have to think of answers for by yourself. The only link I want between HL and HL2 is the gMan and his "employers".
