I love the hamptons server. Nothing like a showdown with some of the best. As long as not every server is like this then there is really no problem with new players getting used to the game. the motf specifically says use another server to learn the basic. There should be a seperate server for the more experienced player or we'll forever be stuck in the noob beating tatics such as going sensory first.
I love the Hamptons too. I don't know if I'm quite as good as y'all... on most pubs I'm slicing through rines like butter as a skulk, but on the Hamptons, I'm the one getting completely owned. But at least there's a LOT more teamwork and communication... eg. gorges don't run away just becasue the node you're working on somehow has your name on it (or run away when you come to help them with theirs ).
My experience with the Hamptons wasn't nearly as pleasant.
I wait for quite some time to download the 5 wavs ( with rather badly sounding names), join in only to find some person calling someone/something ****. Our comm, by the way, didn't actually know what to do, had no orders...then I get kicked by console by a reserved slotter.

Yeah, it is almost always full (which means it's a good server, right? ), but it's still worth it in my mind. Some days I get so upset at 98% nub teams on other servers who seem to completely ignore the other team's attacks, that I think I'll stop playing NS completely except for when the Hamptons has an open slot. Sometimes you get lucky on other servers and have one team that's decent, but an experienced team dominating a newbie team doesn't count as a good game in my book (well, okay, it does count as a certain kind of sadistic fun, but it gets old).
And it's true that playing on Hampton's doesn't guarantee a good game, but it seems like you're far more likely to have a good game on Hamptons than elsewhere.
Their webpage says:

QUOTE

As it currently stands, at any given moment roughly 80% of the players on the server are players with reserved slots. The current list of users with reserved slots is over 200 users, and its growing every day. If you feel that you deserve a reserved slot, feel free to contact HAMBONE in our IRC channel, #hamburg.

I don't know if it's quite 80% as I've played several rounds there without getting kicked, but yeah, you basically log on expecting to get booted at some point.
Does anyone have any idea what their criteria for getting a reserved slot is?
Reserved slots should only be used by Admins in my mind. My server is 26 slots but it will show 24 since I have 2 reserved for Admins. If someone would want on the server that badly they should contact the admins to clear space and ask someone nicely to leave, rather than just giving them the boot.

Hey tuna you should see if you could do a noobie redirect thing, I could give you ips of good servers for noobies to learn on, and when you "kick" them it could redirect them to one of those servers.
In your rules you could say something like "If you ask too many noobish questions or are obviously a noob, then you will be redirected to a server that is more suited to help you." or something that sounds nicer. There are plenty of people willing to teach, but you have to find the right places.

Players without reserved slots will get kicked for players with a slot.

Yes, but sometimes its necessary to guide along the little fellers as they can be very promising in the future if you give them a chance
Dont diss his server please, or I'll have to smack you with a smelly trout

Sorry if I dont feel too much slapped.
Every server needs an ollj saying random NS locations under attack in the mic.

Maybe....
I would never consider this until I have full faith that there will never be another NSplayer or another person seeking to ruin the game. /me says there will always be nubs that seek to ruin the games and scout servers that have ff on just to ruin it...

Thats why you need good admins who are around all the time to hand out admin_bans to people like this.

I'd like to go tourney mode, but as I mentioned, there are only 5 guys now in my clan, and only three active, so I'll need to recruit some "guardians" so that there are more admins on there before I can consider switching to tourney mode, for the problematic reasons Rage mentioned.
We'll see...

Oooo, I wanna check out this server. Sounds fun! Turn on tourny mode though, way more fun that way.
Lets see if I can gain your respect for "guardian" on the server, shall we?
There are servers that embrace noobs, and just because they embrace noobs doesn't mean that everyone sucks, go there until you know the maps better (an example of this is Lunixmonster -> ip below). I have taken many fresh out of the box newbies and helped them out on this server and others like it, and I would consider them to now be very good players, they learned on "newbie friendly servers." This is what these servers are for, helping newbies, and having fun in the process. On LM we get a good number of good pts, and vets, and our regulars are pretty good too, but we also get a lot of noobs, and we are all plenty eager and happy to help them out. The reason why you have servers like Tuna’s, and Hampton’s is so that you can have somewhere to play where you won't have to explain to people that there's nowhere for them to heal them self, and that you can only get big guns from the comm etc. Don’t think the only place to get better is to play on “good players only” servers, because they do not promote a very good learning environment for noobs. You probably are going to end up learning less from these servers then you would from servers where they help noobs, because that’s how they want it. Happy gaming.

I understand this, I just mean that more and more and more servers are going "good players only", so the newbies are getting stuck on all the same servers together. Without vets on a server, a bunch of newbies aren't going to learn anything.
Vets aren't the only ones who know how to play the game. . .

You misunderstand, by vet I mean experienced player.
If there is an NS specific meaning for vet, I don't know it:)
*EDIT* Take for example the post below, some of the pandas (a highly slilled vet clan) are offering to help people improve themselves. . . noobs or non noobs, there's always someone to help.

I hope you're right. I'm just a little worried about more and more servers going "good players only" because they seem to be so popular.
I pity those with no reserved slots on Hamptons, it's a great server. I hope this one is going to be just as great, too, then when there's 21/20, I can go on this!
I don't think there will ever be an overwhelming number of good-player only servers out there, for the simple reason that they're difficult to admin and require a lot of additional maintenance to keep out newbs.
By the way, let me again clarify that TUNA TOWN is for "experienced" players--that does *not* necessarily mean highly skilled, but simply being very familiar with the game and not bugging other players with questions.
In your rules you could say something like "If you ask too many noobish questions or are obviously a noob, then you will be redirected to a server that is more suited to help you." or something that sounds nicer. There are plenty of people willing to teach, but you have to find the right places.
Just a suggestion. . . I don't know if redirecting works for one person at a time, I've only seen it done for a whole server of people to a whole new server, so yeah.

I was looking for it to add it to my favorites, but I can't find it with IP or by the name.
Maybe you switched it over to steam or something?
