c:/sierra/half-life/ns/music
What kind of music are you listening to while playing half-life ? Before 2.0 (since there is a bug that make music stop), I had all the alien movies soundtrack in my NS music folder. Great way to add ambiance ! (And I keep the NS music files, since they are a lot atmospheric.)
My favorite alien soundtrack is : Futile escape. Starts slowly, and after 3 mins : BAM ! (better listened while playing marines )

For one reason it makes it easier to hear anyone creeping up on you.
For a second reason one of the default songs has an ending that sounds like one team has won the game and it can totaly screw you up if your not paying attention.
Come on , the NS title screen music's ending is way longer... I only got confused a few times. Anyways , it's better to have custom win/defeat sounds...
However , there is a 3rd good reason to turn the music off : there's no way a marine player is going to guard the Ominous Kismet res node alone , in heavy silence , at midnight , with the song scaryambiance.mp3 playing
One of my friends put that as his hostage 'use' sound and combined with the CS hostages twitching, running into walls and generally being crud AI, he was still laughing as by the time they found him and shot him in the head ^^;

nexttrack: goes to next track, bind this to a button, also starts playing music if none playing atm.
I believe there's one more command but cant remember it atm.
I don't have too much appropriate music on hand for playing NS. I wouldn't mind playing some Dieselboy, RAM Trilogy, Decoder, Ed Rush & Optical, or just highly agressive, armageddon Drum & Bass/Jungle while playing, but the problem is, that kind of music makes it hard to hear my own GUNFIRE, let alone the gentle tap of approaching skulk feet. Soldiers shouldn't be listening to headphones while they are in a combat environment. It's just not wise. On the other side of the musical spectrum, I could see maybe finding some ambient or low, ominous music, but I don't exactly know any bands that specialize in that, and don't have any on hand. I like the game's music, it seems to work fine for me.
Plus my all time favorite Star Wars - Ceremony and Ending Credits, so many battles have been won and lost to that music its unforgetable!
So don't, there is no good reason to be using HLAmp instead of the built in mp3 player anyways, if you absolutely have to listen to a certain track, just use nexttrack to cycle through all the songs until you get to it, would take about the same amount of time as is it does to navigate a HLAmp menu.
As for the music I listen to, its all about the Matrix Reloaded Soundtrack, aside from the fact that it is so damn good, you can turn the volume down (just enough so that you can hear skulk footprints easily) and it still sounds cool.
Starts off with a type of old German dance music complete with the clapping and shouting then, *BOOM* it explodes into really heavy rock music thats perfect for tearing up marines.
One day I'm gonna have it playing and stick my microphone up to the speakers so I can freak everybody out...although the instant kick will probably tone the moment down.
Besides NS isn't really made for a lot of music, just enough to be atmospheric and just low enough so you can barely hear all but a small part of it.
As Geminosity-san suggested Benny Hill theme is a must, specially if there is only one or two Marines left and they have to relocate the other side of the map.
other than that, i generally like the hardcore stuff. skulks are so hXc. o.O
Slayer
Metallica
Hammerfall
Domo Arigato Mr Roboto
Pistol Packin' Momma (Bing Crosby dontcha know =3 )
Megaman II - Doctor Wily's castle
Benny Hill Theme Tune
Nadesico - Lets go Genki Ganger 3!!!
Ducktales - Moonscape
do I listen to these ingame? nuh-uh.
Am I about to try to in a few seconds time to see if I can do this without laughing my head off? yup
