Download link inside
Thanks to insight found in this steam forum post, I quickly put together the files necessary for an NS splash background for use in Steam. edit: This background is the original splash background that came with NS.

I did look through the various other forums for something like this and came up with nothing, though I didn't check to see if the 114MB installer came with these files already. My point is, I apoligize if this has already been done.

edit: file unavailable on my host. Please use mirrors in following posts. Thanks a bunch for the help, guys.

Download from replies below

Unzip the files into your Steam\SteamApps\
\half-life directory.
For further clarification, the .tga files included in this zip should end up in:
Steam\SteamApps\
\half-life\ns\resource\background

Currently, all is known is how to make splash screens optimized for 800x600 resolution. I tried making a 1024x768 scheme by cutting the 1024x768 splash.bmp into the appropriate sizes and naming them 1024_#_x_loading.tga, but found this did nothing. If you run in a mode higher than that the image will be slightly stretched like a windows desktop. I still think it looks more fitting than freeman.

so that steam doesnt show the name of Half life in the corner i made this small file that makes it Natural Selection. the pictures go directly into the "resource" folder in case something is wrond with the file structure in the zip.

i just felt that if you where going to use the ns backdrop that you also might want to get the name half-life out of the corner of the screne

    Screenie and another mirror.

I also noticed this one in that thread too, but there is no download link available. Can't wait to see the offical one, I've heard it's excellent.

That one is obviously taken from the eye picture... heh
however the actual horizontal resolution of that is about 200 pixels... stretched to 800 pixels (4x) makes it look a little blurry and stuff like that. it really was just an experiment to see exactly how the system worked... i gues if you want it you can have it...

Another very important front end menu fix: Removing the "New Game" text.

Download the attachment, it's called "GameMenu.RES" and goes in your steam\steamapps\
\half-life\ns\resource folder (almost same place as the folder that contains the background pictures)

PS - I've seen around 3 or 4 posts containing these three fixes in the Tech support, Creation, and Artwork forums. You can never have enough I guess.

To take advantage of Steam and give it an ever more NS feel, I find that adding startup music is not only cool, but make the wait for connecting to a server a little more tolerable.

copy ns\music\ns_titlescreen.mp3 to the folder ns\media
    rename that mp3 to gamestartup.mp3

At first I thought I would get annoyed with that same startup music over time, but after a month I still enjoy it. You might want to disable music in game, however, to avoid wearing it out.

Well, in some ways that Half-Life image kinda fits. It gives credit to the engine it was built on in a quiet sort of way. I find it sad when, for example, a new CS player doesn't even know what Half-Life is.

But none of the other mods have half-life in the corner

Anyone has a pic for the small icon left of the games name? I just know this pics are located at C:\Steam\Steam\Games you need quicktime to open them.
