<div class="IPBDescription">HD screws itself on shutdown...</div> Perhaps it's just my computer, or maybe just RH9, but for some reason, Linux is screwing itself...
So I have a bunch of server software running off of RH9. I have the whole damn thing installed... EVERYTHING...
Now, the server worked fine when it was running, but I went to tweak some settings and passwords and crap, and when I went to shutdown, it... never shut down... it just stayed on, with the damn blinking white underscore, and some crap about how it's trying to halt the system and shutting off it's hard drive. So after leaving it there for an hour, just thinking it was taking it's time, I decided to unplug the ****.
When I started it up again, it failed to start a bunch of services, and mentioned that a portion of the hd was screwed up.
I've formatted and reinstalled several times, and the same problem has happened...
I'm about to throw the damn thing out the window!11!1 (huh huh... windows...)
Windows ain't great as a server, especially since I run apache on the same box as well...

If you think your harddrive is the problem, start anew with a new harddrive. Harddrives aren't that expensive, just get a new one thats like 60 gbytes, doesn't have to be more than that, its just a server.
If it still doesn't work with the software, then it is your fault.

Can you be more specific, so that we can help? There are numerous possibilities here, from filesystem corruption, to partition table corruption, to disk failure, to controller failure, etc. Just installing Windows won't help you if you're got a hardware failure on your hands. The error messages, verbatim down to the punctuation, tell us a lot. The installation procedure that you used helps. Basically, there is no such thing as "too much information."
Then it corrupts my thumbdrive :'(
I once ran scandisk on my hard-drive and it completely ate the partition table (don't ask me how, that shouldn't even be possible).
But back to the point - depending on what kind of file system you were using and what error messages you are getting, the solution could be anything - from a simple fsck, to deleting the disk partition table and starting afresh, or the much more drastic buying a new hard-drive.
All I can say is that I hope you didn't have any important data on there, and that you tell us those error messages before you throw that drive out the window
I'm not that much of a newbie to Linux, I just tend to suck without a GUI...
I'll probably just get a whole new damn server with RH10 when it comes out or maybe mandrake, unless that's crap...
A failing controller, cable, motherboard, memory, or other part can cause filesystem corruption though. Unless you're running a bleeding-edge version of a filesystem, it's probably a hardware or driver problem that resulted in the corruption.
I had a CS server when it was working...
hrmmm... ::ponders::
Perhaps if I had the Natural Selection source code I could make my own damn compile!1!
Speaking of NS source code, will this game ever be open-source?
It would be REALLY nice to see the previous versions of the mod as well, to see how it progressed, and what kinds of techniques they used to pull down the server CPU usage over time. The servers run so much better now!
also, I think it would be easier to make hacks if the source was released....
I think...
**** I WANT IT NOW!! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
