Where can we get in on these PUGs if we're not in the clan scene? Or is this for league players only?

idle in lots of rooms in IRC. look for other players and form your own, or know someone who's in one (those are my three suggestions). I only know about it cause I know Jane and idle in #findnsclan

yes, it's contributing to teamwork in pubs where you can also help the community. ppl remember this, and gets them more interested in NS, who knows, maybe they do the leadership thing too next time

what the pubs are sorely missing is leadership and or organization. just try and inject a bit o that into yer favorite pub, you'll prolly get a much better game.

and bravo to you sheezy, for doing that

Definately Nightowl. You have to find a "reg-heavy" pub to have enjoyable games. (*cough* OldF servers come to mind *cough*)

Plain pub servers are exceptionally frusterating.

Ok here's the deal right now a few of our guys get sort of snobby to people that are new to pugging *cough blunt *cough* So I made a new channel for people that want to play pugs, but might not have any previous pugging experience. I think this is necessary because I have a lot of friends that I consider to be very good players but they have never played in a clan, or with tourney mode/ ff on, so I think this will be a good warm up for that. The channel is called #pugx-jr and it is for anyone who wants to get into pugging, and no previous pug, clan, or ff experience is necessary. I look forward to seeing a good crowd there. I also highly reccomend the Panda training sessions on Sundays because that will really help you to get more into the clan like mind set. Even if you already know everything there is about NS, I would still reccomend you go to it if you are not familiar with clan play. This pug group shouldn't take too long to start off because I know a lot of people are interested in it, so please just idle in the channel, and we'll make it very clear there when games are available. Oh and spread the word.

Join both of these channels if you want to get into pugging:

#pugx-jr <- where we will be gathering people to go play
#findnsclan <- for information about the panda training sessions, and how to play NS in a clan/ pug type of way

*EDIT* I tried to get this going but every time we had enough to play it ended up just being like a public server with tourney mode on, so I'm not going to mess with this, if someone else wants to, then be my guest.

You say you have a 'team'... um... explain? You have a small group of PUGs you just like playing with? I thought the point of a PUG was that you DON'T have a set team...
• fo_sheezy_my_neezyfo_sheezy_my_neezy Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10768Members, Constellation
well, tbh, this isn't true pugging. True pugging is grabbing a bunch of people and playing some other bunch of people with tourney mode on. Kind of like a super-pub. This is where we have like 15 people we choose our 6 from, basically whoever's on. They (we) have been playing clans, and not other pugs mostly, but it's still fun. And think about it, if you find a team of good people you click with and like to play with, and they happen to have clans already, you're gonna want to stay with the same "team". I don't know, I may be explaining it bad.......

we do organized pugging, but we also do spur of the moment pugging, there's something for everyone

Shush ut the definition of pug already. I had bluntman drill the fact that a pug is a "random collection of players" for ten minutes before kickbanned him from my clan chan. When you come down to it, who the hell cares. Let's just call it an "open team" for now. A group of people who are familiar playing with each other and yet lets others join in if they feel like it. The point Jane's trying to make is that it's a lot of fun. I'd also like to add that it's also very educational. You'll learn more about NS by playing organized games w/ the peeps of #pugx then you'll ever learn pubbing. For those interested in clanship but are afraid of scrims and matches, this is the place to gain a little scrim experience and get some notice by some of the top NS clans (including dn and GoM).

Pugx-jr is no more due to the edits in the two posts of mine that explained about it, sorry for anyone who enjoyed those games, but it doesn't seem to be working well. GGs. #pugx will still be up and running so feel free to stop by there if you want to play with us, or you are a team that is looking for another to play.

hopefully we'll be getting the OldF servers full and running again.

we're gonna try and all play on PJ (pj.oldf.net) at around 7pm PST. the great thing about PJ, atm, besides being on a fat pipe, is that the reserve system is setup NOT to kick you if you are already on it basically just sets aside some slots for the fogies and that's it.

again, that's 7pm PST thursdays (10pm if yer on the east coast.)

Never pugged or clanned. In any game. Ever.

Probably never will. I prefer the true randomness of public gaming, and as much as I like teamwork I don't like the idea of being in a clan and being someone's property.

Just funny, I guess. However, if pugging raises people's play standards then I'm all for SUPPORTING it, as it makes pub life easier.

Try it before blatantly insulting it please. You are not anyone else's property. Being in a clan is no different from being in a school sports team, with perhaps the lack of a official coach (normally, there is a leader sort of figure). It's NOT about playing some guy's **** -- far from it. Give it a shot.
• NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
I fail to see any insult, direct or implied?

Second, I never joined a school sports team either.

Thirdly, due to the hierarchical structure, you ARE someone's property. You answer to them, they answer to the higher ups, etc etc all the way up the chain.

And I can do without that hanging over me when I'm gaming, thanks.
• LastLast Join Date: 2003-10-06 Member: 21463Members
wth? Higher ups? What higher ups? Most NS clans don't have any stupid "rank" or "class" stuff. That's for 13 year old starcraft clans. I've never ever heard of some chain of command in any NS clan, for most people it's a group of friends who like to play games. You ARE insulting clans by implying that by being in a clan you are someone else's property. That is just a LIE. You're judging clans before ever being in one -- a big mistake made by a lot of people, trust me.
• NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
You can't claim to speak on behalf of all NS clans.

Secondly, lots of clans for lots of games work to a clan structure, because its handy for training purposes. Some go as far as having "wings" or "squads" or "cells" which cover certain areas/servers/timezones.

I've said nothing against the clan scene, however I do find it odd that you consider a hierarchy to be a symbol of "13 year old starcraft clans", which if anything is more insulting that my personal belief that it makes you someone else's property. You are property, even at the most basic level where you belong to their clan and abide by their rules.

I just personally prefer the chaos of the pub scene *shrug*. I would think it reasonably prudent to accept that both of us have differing opinions on what we want in our games, so I'd consider it a mark of good character that we end this sidetrack discussion here without any glib parting comments - there's absolutely no need for us to continue to derail this thread.

Although I disagree with/ am offended by a some of the stuff you have stated, you bring up a valid point.

NS may be dying, clan play is becoming iffy for now, but two new alternatives have been invented in hopes of stemming this decline:

Pugs: For those who don't like nubs, or don't like "being property" or bound to any clan, this is a great opportunity to play clan level games without having to be in a clan. Meet new people, generally friendly atmosphere, people try to be professional-ish but usually end up courteous, a nice way to see if clan level play is your bag or not. Read back in this thread for more info. JOIN TO GET A TASTE OF THE TANGY TASTE OF CLAN SCRIMMAGE!

NS-Draft: NS-D is for EVERYONE, clan play at its highest levels is the top10 playing eachother over and over again. NS-Draft is an attempt to shake things up by shuffling the deck we call "players" rather than the skill stacked clan games. Check their thread for more info. JOIN UP AND HELP BRING THE STUFFY CLAN SCENE NEW LIGHT!

If we can get enough support for either this should bring a fresh new "feel" to the game's community.

PS Also Necrosis, it sounds like you have some personal insecurities, try new things, you only have yourself to blame if you live life blandly, if you join a clan you can blame them. <3

Strange, sounds jus like my clan....

Somebudy wanted to make a clan so we did and it had 2 peeple on it, then sumone else joined and sumbudy asked for a clanmatch after that i had to get mIRC, damn mIRC... and i found out that i needed 6 peeple so i went and gathered up a few more random peeple and we had a clan match. Crap thing is that they arent as reliable as real clan members, they wod jus leave in the middle of the match and we all suked so sumone from the other clan joined our side .

In the same spirit, I could suggest many "new" things for you to try, mostly involving large vehicles and your broken bloody body.

Leave me to my preferences and you stick to your own, without the glib remarks. YOU sound like you have social interaction problems if you need to go online to meet friends.

Now, are we quite finished with the mud slinging, or you want another shot?

Honestly, I don't understand why people can't shut their pieholes and just agree to disagree. I said pugs were a good idea, but just not for me, but noooo, can't leave it at that, can they.

Dude, most NS clans have no sort of structure.

A bunch of people get together. You devise a plan. You play. You either win/lose.

This is because most NS clans are small. Under 15 players. You can't have a military sort of order. Everything is pretty much a direct democracy with a leader. Usually, if the leader doesn't want to **** off his clan, he won't dismiss them all.

And, if you don't like something about a clan, you just leave. You are yourself, free to do whatever.

Go join up with a clan, and see for yourself.

And, at the end of the day, you can always join NSD. This is basically organized pubbing, but a LOT more organized. It's a league of pug's where everyone is drafted into teams, and then these teams stay together for a season. At the end of each season, players are reshuffed. The picking process is done with leaders, but I assure you leaders serve no other role than organizing up their team.

Its kinda funny, the "balance" shows in tightly knit clan fights with high amounts of teamwork, yet there is next to no competitive NS play.
It amuses me that when the fatal flaws of this mod are shown, you are flamed and told to join a clan. Kinda hard when nobody wants to even play competitively.

There are plenty of clans to join. NS clan play is claimed as dying because many of the new clans rarely get up to be able to compete with the top NS players.
