<div class="IPBDescription">What changes can you name?</div>I thought it would be fun if we could all name an old feature, and then name how that feature changed into what it is now

For instance

Marines used to get their resources simply by killing aliens, but now they get their resources from resource nodes

blinky's blink used to be a charge up ability (distance depending on how long you charged it up, and could go thorugh walls and such), but now it's a single click, and you go as far as you can until you hit a piece of the level or another person/building/bob

Flayras original plan was to just have Marines vs. Aliens, no resources buildings or commander; Check the original plan at <a href="http://www.overmind.org" target="_blank">Overmind</a>

NS was going to originally be counter terrorists vs terrorists.  Then someone had the bright idea of making it CT's and T's in space.

Then, after, a particularly frightening yet trippy dream Flayra had, induced by a 3 week old piece of moldy tofu he accidentally ingested at dinner, he decided to make the terrorists aliens instead.

    And history was made.

I beleive at one point aliens had an 'overmind' which was a commander, but it was scraped to make each side more unique.

Aliens used to get resources when they saw a Marine near death. And actually I'm not sure what they changed that to.

Aliens used to have silly nicknames and now they have real names...*coughbiomechanoidcough*

gorge used to be able to create eggs for spawning reasons so that aliens could spawn in places besides hives.  They have since been removed.

The Level four concept could not blink, It reppeled off of walls and gained speed each time.

    <i>Skulk's</i> original name was Okegite

Oh God, Okegite as the name of a lvl1 would pwn. I honestly like it more than Skulk.

Hmm, apparently stated two years ago:

"Medium and heavy armor (slows movement, greatly increases damage and carrying capacity, purchased)" So I'm now guessing that it isn't a new concept, just something that they've finnished, or decided to bring back. You used to have to purchase things. Now everythings given by commander or picked up by someone else dropping it.

I always thought the richochet of walls idea was cooler than the blink idea, but I bet it would be alot harder to control and harder to code
  • JediYoshiJediYoshi The Cupcake Boss Join Date: 2002-05-27 Member: 674Members
Not neccisarily harder. Just <i>more</i> to code.

    The forums:
used to be topics would stay on topic, but now it's evolved towhere a tread on something (like changes in NS) evolves into a series of messages that should be PMs and off topic posts

To add to the above post there seems to be alot more flames to people who are new "newbies".

I recieved a reasonably friendly welcoming when I started posting a few days ago. However, I think some of it may have been that I didn't ask any of the questions that seem to provoke people. Many new people just hop in and start posting, thus often running afoul of the common problems such as release date related stuff, or asking questions that are answered seemingly weekly.

This is their fault for not reading the FAQ, more of the questions, etc. However, and this is the important part to remember, this is no excuse for rudeness or yelling at them. Show a little patience and restraint, and just answer their questions politely and point them to the FAQ, etc. If you are so fed up that you don't think you can do this, then refrain from answering and let someone else who is feeling more cool-headed do it.

Otherwise you get someone new who shows up, says something along the lines of "Hi, I'm new, this mod looks really cool, so when does it come out?", which is a pretty reasonable question on many forums, and he gets in return something like this:

Flame Flame ARGH! READ THE FAQ Flamity NO SPECULATING FLAME FLAME!

totally ignoring the fact that he said the mod sounds cool, and that he obviously is new and interested. Responses similar to the above, while perhaps mildly justified are more likely to aggravate and drive away new people.

We all like to say how wonderful NS is, but let's try and make sure that the community lives up to and is worthy of the Natural Selection mod.

Sorry, this was supposed to be a short comment, but it is something I really hate to see. The more persistent newbies will remain and get the hang of things, but losing everyone else who isn't hardcore and determined is not necessarily a good thing, in my mind...

Yes twilight i agree, in fact, ive told people several times the exact same thing. If you have nothing good to say, then you dont have to post. Theres no need to reply to every single thread you see, if you dont like the topic, dont post.

    As far as changes...

I seem to recall that the marines weapon of choice for battling aliens was the AK-47. They also went for a little armor that showed off their necks as was probably the fashion before har har har.

i still remember when the alien hive concept art was shown to the public, there was a discussion and they where goin to make different hive models: one hive that hangs from roof, one that stands on the floor and another one from a wall....... but after a long discussion the answer was only roof hives <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I remember that too, I actually brought it up in IRC a while ago.

That's it? No one else remembers any other changes? I find that difficult to believe, especially with some of the old-timers on this forum.

Or perhaps you just don't feel like talking, or maybe forgot?
