Gamma Overbrighting Doesn't Seem To Work In Win2k3

When joining a game, i get the message
"Display doesn't support downloadable gam" [gamma]
And the game is dark, because the overbrighting effect isn't getting applied.

Also, the alien text (like on the scoreboard) is green instead of yellow (this may or may not be related)

Anyone have a workaround for this? or do I have to downgrade my os just to play ns? Messing with gamma in the ati control panel has no effect on ns, even using hotkeys to try to change it ingame... though i dunno if these worked in win2k either because I never had a need.

Note that everything worked fine in windows 2000, and gamma works properly in quake3 (which also does overbrighting though maybe implemented differently), so the problem seems to be confined to ns.

Here's what i'm running:
Windows 2003 Standard
Ati Radeon 9500, catalyst 3.8
ns is running at 800x600 in opengl

check for updated/correct video drivers? settings on monitor set correctly/default? half-life settings set correctly?

I listed my video drivers and halflife settings in my post....

    but, to repeat:
catalyst 3.8 are the newest ati drivers
halflife video settings are 800x600 in opengl, and any non-registry (as in, cvar) settings are still intact since it's the same installed copy of the game that worked in win2k

If it matters (I doubt it does) I'm using halflife retail, and the problem also occurs going through steam.

as for monitor settings, i've tried different monitor drivers just in case (plug and play monitor and the real manufacturer driver), and it didn't help.. and once again, the monitor settings are the same as they were when it worked fine in win2k, as well as the error message I listed in my post in place of the normal "gamma set to 1.5" message make it pretty obvious its not my monitor settings.

I've done enough tech support in my life to try all the 'normal' things, thanks =P

you have to understand, there are a lot of people who don't try the 'normal' things, but it sounds like and ATI related issue, what drivers did you use in Win2k?

    Catalyst 3.8 drivers:

    ook

well, this is the exact description of what happens if you try and play NS with 2 moniters

do you have 2 moniters? If so the only known work around is to disable one.

If not I don't know of any known soloution to this problem. I have seen it pop up a few times with out the second moniter and either no one has found an ans or no one has posted it up....

I was using the same drivers in win2k.

As for the supported os thing, it's the same driver architecture.. the same way windows 2000 drivers worked on xp when it came out. I'm not sure where you're going with the supported os stuff, since it's not like there's a win2k3 specifc driver on ati's site that I could be using (likely for the reason listed above).

The problem could very well be (and probably is) a flaw in win2k3, and possibly even the drivers, but not one that can't be worked around somehow (since other games gamma and overbrighting work).

The multi-monitor thing is a good point, I'm not running multiple monitors though. I tried multi mon a few months back in 2k, and had to switch back to one monitor because of this and other game related problems.. I got sick of disabling the 2nd monitor whenever I wanted to play games.

I'll let this sit here for a week or so and see if anyone's found a solution, and if not i'll make a post on the bug board so it can be ignored there. =P I'll mention the multimonitor thing in the post as well, though there's actually reasons why an os would disable gamma changes in a multi monitor setup (though I wish it could be overridden)
