...
interested in investing in the 9800 pro after the holidays when (hopefully) we can expect a price drop. heard rumors to the effect that the 256mb version is a waste due to programs inability to take advantage of the extra memory, and seeing on ebay currently there's a 128mb version going for $180.
so talk nasty, talk video cards to me all you fellow gamer geeks out there

Why not get the 256 pro? The games might not utilize all the memory now but what about a year or so from now? 256 might be the standard. Why not get a head start on things?

I ask this question because I am planning on purchasing a 256.

Gah, I'm an nVidia fanboy, because I remember way back in the day when ATI cards TOTALLY SUCKED.

Not to mention an old "All In Wonder" I had somehow completely NUKED MY SYSTEM.

I have a 9800 pro and find it to be absolutely excellent with no issues and tremendous performance. If you can get it at that price, get it.

180 bucks? hell yeah go get it :o

The 256 isn't really needed atm. And I think that when 256 WILL be needed, then the 9800 would be a slow model, seeing the ways cards are advancing. Better buy two middle-range cards and have medium-medium performance, than one high-end card and get high->low performance (I remember when I bought my GeForce3 how amazing it was. Now I can't even run Max Payne 2 fluidly enough)

Actually, the 256MB may come in handy on a DX9 card... all textures have FAR greater color depth, as well as an alpha channel, making them roughly three to four times the size of a standard DX8 texture 'chunk'.

Only ran into this as I'm helping out with tracking down problems in a coding project, and couldn't figure out why loading all textures at 2048x2048 on my R9500 Pro made it bork, but the machine with an R9000 Pro ran just happy and fine, when they're both 128MB cards.

Definitely get it for that price if you can, if it's an R9800 Pro. EXTREMELY good deal for the cash. I'd suggest double-checking though, as that's standard price for an R9600 Pro (whcih is far inferior, though still a good card for the price).

the 9800 pro is OVERKILL. the only purpose of epending like, 600$ ona gfx card not is bragging rights. Id hold out till we see some breakthrough action.
