Geek-style
Well we've had some really REALLY cold temperatures here (It was 80 last week and now it's about 20...). My house is very open, not very insulated, and thus, not very warm. Looking for cheap ways to heat the house... I turned to my computer. With all the fans in it, it's running at about 80 degrees.
So I disabled the fans blowing air in (about half), and reversed the ones in front so they blow out. I took off the case, so they're bare blowing straight into the room. The core temp went up from 80 to 120-30ish.
The result: A furnace spewing nice hot air into my room! It's about 40 degrees warmer in here then it is in the rest of the house now

Comments
i should try that, but it never gets cold (live in kansas, moved from canada)
My monitor is a beast. It raises the temp of my room a good 10 degrees C.
And my mommy said that I'd never amount to anything...
800 pounds is what? 1,500 dollars? My whole system cost like $600... or 300ish pounds...
One of my friends wanted to buy an alienware.. the $3,200 system with the AMD 64 bit processor.
I showed him how to build a better one for half the price (Yee haa 250 gig hard drive). Take the rest of the cash and spend it on a 22" LCD screen. He won't talk to me anymore because I made fun of him the whole time.
Anyway, a furnace costs about $1,500 as well, even without installation costs... then you have to pay out the **** for gas... I"m sure you could buy several computers to do the same job Not to mention computers are electric without the risk of fire hazard, and can do much more then the furnace can.
[wanders off making friction heat]
The only problem...
do you have to be constantly doing something on the computer?
Stay warm :-)

I'm talking the whole lot, monitor and all.
So your computer cost £300, how much of that was the monitor.

Well, if you're worried about system load needing to be kept up, just run something like the distributed.net RC5-72 client. Easily brings my CPU temperature up to about 72C if I leave it running for any length of time. Which reminds me... must re-apply the thermal paste, and buy a new CPU cooler with birthday cash. If not just a new CPU/mobo.

Nope. I know a few Canadians, and they all hate the french. Well, except for JeeR, they say.
