There is a small (500kb) installer floating around somewhere (not on steampowered.com), but whatever you download you still have to get the cache files.

If all you want to do is play NS, then you need the Half-Life cache. This comes with the HL cache already there, and the others can be downloaded later as you need.

I personally recommend getting the full cache if at all possible, it will save a lot of time later on if you want to play extra mods, but if you're after a quick NS game, all you need is the HL cache.

I chose the install with Half-life and nothing else. (I think thats the minimal amount you need for NS.) Not sure. I don't play CS or DoD so I don't need those other mods.

my steam just died on today's update and I can't get it back up

You need the HL cache version to play only HL (or NS) the CS version if you want to play CS and HL, DoD if you want DoD and HL etc..

Get the full version to get all the games.

22% of which download? The install, the update, the platform update, the preparation to play, compiling, game launching?

Now 54% of downloading the installation file, i decided to download the biggest one, after all i now have connection without time tariffication and for some time yet without data limit.

The other things you mentioned, the update...game launching etc., the last one scares me, it sounds like launching the game takes long.?. Scary.

just about half an hour once you get the file, I'd say. If you don't get any problems

Surely you meant only once, not every time when i want to start hl.

Have you? (getting really scared)

If you have the latest version of the WON system HL installed, get the small installer file. It can get most of the files out of your old directory, so you won't have to download as much.

No, some people have had problems with Steam, doing idiotic things like ALT+F4ing it, or shutting it down from the process list. The 'half hour to start' thing is when you do this, it confuses Steam so it has to check all of its cache files for completeness and corruption. If you right-click on the steam icon in your system tray and choose 'exit steam' every time, it might take at most 30 *seconds* to load.

Ignore the anti-steam whingers. They weren't around at the start of Half-Life, so don't remember how HORRIBLE WON was at the time. They jumped in with a mostly-tested product at worst, and now have to deal with the release-troubles. Thankfully, Steam is LOADS better than WON's release, which took four to six months to get anywhere *near* reliable. Steam is developing and stabilizing about three times faster than WON did.

Additionally, most of the problems people attribute to Steam *aren't* Steam's fault. They're caused by the Half-Life 1.1.2.0 patch, which comes with Steam. Now that the Steamservers have bandwidth to breathe with (as opposed to half the planet hammering them), the Steam auth works just fine, every time.

Not even a month after WON's inception, you'd be lucky to be able to join a multiplayer HLDM once out of every twelve times you tried. It was THAT bad.
Not even a month after Steam's inception, you just have people complaining about how they want to stick with WON, badmouthing Steam unbasedly.

only once. Actually, game launching is something from the beta, mostly. For some reason, once in-game, the first cs game you wanted to have, you needed to download some more before joining the server.

As talesin said, most problems come when you terminate the program.

add: I haven't tried cs since the real release so I wouldn't know if that's still there.

I downloaded the small installer with no cache files, left it going overnight and in the morning I had the full range just sitting there waiting to play. Steam is the best thing to happen to multiplayer for a long time, since it's now so tightly integrated with the games. Plus I can go to any PC with Steam installed, login as me, and have all my games just sitting there ready to go

The preparing to play (tried normal HL) was not so long, it took about 7 minutes. Althru i dont know what it was doing, minimal CPU usage, net and disc activity dicey

Now just figure out how to add the games i actually play.

you should have a steam/steamapps/email/half-life directory. Just treat that as your normal HL root when adding mods.

• jacksonjO4jacksonjO4 Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11613Members, Constellation
up the resolution?

Start Game -> Options -> Video
• ZerogreatZerogreat Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10537Members
No, i use 1152x864 (highest resolution where my monitor can use 100Hz refresh rate), without Steam the font size was ok, but now the font is too big and fat.

wait for NSv2.1?

I'm not much of a steam customiser, all I know is how to get it working. You may want to try the FAQ or the forums at www.steampowered.com

Read the second bullet point thingy.

So apparently Flayra's found a way to tweak it. So... Wait for 2.1 anyway.
