spam is NOT tasty first up
it was invented during wwII (I think) when rationing was in place
basicaly its all of the scrap bits of a pig put into a can (shuders)
and yes there is a song out there that basicaly degenerates into the cast chanting spam (this seems to be the most logical place that the ussage came from)
I think what it *could* be referring to, but i have no idea if this is true, this is just my logic.
In the spam sketch, on Monty Python's Flying Circus, they say spam a lot, repetatively. Such as "spam spam spam spam spam n eggs spam spam and spam", probably not a real line, but that's what it's like. Maybe that's got something to do with it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
*EDIT: And yes, SPAM itself is all the entrails and reprocessed crap even McDonald's wouldn't touch, rolled into one sub-standard meatblock. It was made to be a cut price and non-wasteful meat back in the war years.

Spam actually only refers to unsolicited e-mails, but so many people use it to mean any time something is done ad nauseum. "OMG stupid p4p3rb0y is spamming my doorstep again. With newspapers."

Spam IS good. It's meat you don't have to cook. When I use to be whiter trash living in the ghetto, I use to eat it out of the can with a bottle of mustard in one hand and a fork in the other. Of course we couldn't afford SPAM, so we got the X brand same stuff called TREET.
I guess its safe to say that I belong in the upper-middle class, but I myself still enjoy the taste of spam, coupled with some stir fried rice. Yummy.... Dangit now I'm hungry.....
it comes from Monty Python's spam sketch, where this couple comes flying down into this restaurant, with vikings, and the waitress reads the menu. Oh and the vikings keep singing "spam spam spam spam spam! Lovely Spam!"
Cereal got it. The reason why constant pointless irritating stuff like that is called spam, is because the couple was trying to order and the vikings kept breaking into the spam song every time someone mentions spam.
The sketch, and a link to the song, is <a href='http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_python.htm' target='_blank'>here</a>.
Well...the can of spam does say "pork stock" which yes, <i>does</i> mean crap. You'd be surprised what you're eating. Did you know that in any given hamburger (at BK, for instance) there are over 100 different cows? Trust me - I know a few diehard hippies whoa are crazy about this crap. I'v read the literature. I've seen the tapes. If you saw half the crap they put in your food, you'd never eat again.
Of course, I don't give a damn. I mean hey - you gotta live sometime, eh?
I don't care what part of the pig makes spam. If it tastes good, eat it. There are all sorts of foods that people eat that are made from wierd stuff. Some examples off the top of my head:

i can remember there was a meat factory that was producing this canned meat called "spam".. this company got infamous by their promotion action to promote this canned meat. they spread thousands of flyers, posters ,and other promo material over the whole city ( was it london?) it was a gigantic mess... thousands of this spam comercial flyers covering the streets like tarmac, and the posters where on nearly every building, bus, and other impossible places.. it was the most expensive and anoying campaign ever..
I've found the most widespread definition of what it's come to mean is "excessive repitition". Bulk emails are spam because they're the same message repeated to everyone indiscriminately. I've seen chat flooding referred to as spam. In TFC, chucking all your grenades in one place without knowing if there's anyone there is called grenade spam; you're repeatedly throwing grenades.

Hmm, never knew where the word came from, but the stuff is disgusting. I live in Hawaii, and yes, its very popular here. *shudders* it tastes.. eh, and if you think about whats in it, O_O
Invented during WWII (not Monty Python)as a way to utilize pork pieces that were not large enough to sell on their own. No part of SPAM is substandard or in any way unfit for consumption.
Waste not, want not.
<b>edit:</b> While not a Monty Python word invention, the term and product were both created in Britain.
