i'm assuming that is a second floor up to? if not i don't quite see how a gorge is suppose to get up there to build the hive

Yeah, it's a second floor... two of the four corners are lifts that will take you up there.

I keep meaning to add a ladder that lets you climb out of the pit up onto the bridge. Thanks for reminding me.

Nope, that's the whole hive room. You walk in through one of two entrances, and you can see the resource tower as soon as you turn the corner. In order to shoot the hive, though, you have to either walk onto the res platform or fire through one of the windows on either floor. Jps won't fit on top of the hive, though they could perch on the tentacle bridge and knife the hive.

The upper level floors are func_seethroughs set to 25% for commander mode. Commanders can place structures on the ground floor of the hive, or on the crossbeams on the upper levels.

I used to play and map Duke 3D a little bit. Maybe it's just rubbed off on me. Or maybe it's the fact that boxes hadn't quite gone out of style yet back then.

looks great, i'm not much a fan of the tentacle-hanging thingys but you seem to have pulled it off quite well. good to see a nice original design for a hiveroom
