University Firewall Issues

Was running NS fine until two weeks ago, then for about 2-3 days straight my whole internet connection was erratic, as in periodic lack of internet access, or extremely slow access for a minute or two etc. After things calmed down i found myself unable to connect or find any NS servers... I'm currently connecting to the internet in a dorm, which means through the university network, so I gave it a week to see if they were just making changes (they've been doing that a lot this semester ::mutters::). so what I've manage to figure out so far is..

HL itself runs fine, can run it (all of the mods I have) single-player without any problems
i can connect to GameSpy itself, but it can't find any HL servers (NS or otherwise)
the in-game HL server listing can't find any servers either
direct connecting to servers from the console doesn't work
borrowed EQ from a friend, installed it.. it updates fine but can't connect to their game servers...
I *can* use MSIE and AIM, can still play my favorite MUD
I'm 95% sure i'm not behind a proxy (which I think means it's most likely firewall/port issues)

essentially my question is... is there any workaround possible or do I need to go have a talk with the university computing center?

I'm pretty sure the problem isn't my system but here's the basic info..
WinXP Pro 5.1, SP1
AMD Athlon 1Ghz, 640MB RAM
Creative Labs Annihilator 3d AGP video card (32MB 1xAGP)
Soundblaster LIVE audio card...
if you want more specifics just let me know

try to connect to a server that uses a different port...

    I use the port 7000 instead of 6667 for IRC? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I was under the impression NS, and HL in general had to use the same port all the time, if not how would I go about changing that or finding a server that used a different port?

add +port 80 to your half life commandline, then you will send everything through the http port, which they probably wont block.. just dont try and host an internet server..
or contact them and get that port unblocked

heres what to do, find what port hl uses, then goto grc.com and run shields up all port test. If hl's port is closed or stealthed, talk to your admin about opening it. im sure they would let you as it isn't illegal etc...

both port 27015 and 27005 are closed, what do i need to do to make sure it's not something on my end before I go try pulling teeth with the university computing dept?

I do have zonealarm installed but typically don't run it unless I plan on being away from my computer for a while.

it almost sounds like they dont let you receive UDP packets
these little guys are the reason you can play almost all online games

if your university does this, then you are probably not going to be able to find a way around it unless then allow you personally to receive them.
maybe you can strike a deal and have them open up a couple ports for your use. i dont know how strict your university is, but it definately sounds like UDP blocking
