is it just me?
or have many maps for 2.0 and even in 1.04 and such, they dont have any sort of rubble like there was some resistence against the aliens and little fights previously before the TSA marines arrived there, i mean in eclipse near the hive eclipse theres a busted wall with a pipe and such but i think it would add alot more atmoshpere if maps had many areas of broken shakcles on the floor or mabe a bloody handprint on a wall that has been dragged down. or even some cracks and scrapes and dents in some walls or areas. like busted computers sparking slightly lights flickering with sparks. i mean i LOVE all the ns maps. even tho they have atmosphere to em i think a map with areas where u could see there was a mini fight between guards or something and resistence agaist the alien overruning process. (just talking about that makes me want to try mappnig again lol) sigh if it were only so easy =(

yea but thats ONE thing, i mean im talking about alot of areas with alot of rubbish to show "theres something not human on this ship" kind of feel almost like "alien and alien 3" feel to the atmoshpere of the maps

hmmm, he's right, you know. the whole atmosphere thing is done very well on the whole, but if there was some evidence of a bit of a battle or something then it could make that little bit of a difference...

On Tanith there is damage in Sat comm & Fusion hive, there is also some outside Waste Management hive.

You're right to an extent, but I belive on of the main problems is the restrictions imposed on NS maps. Broken pipes and jagged pieces of whatever do not help r_speeds at all lol. But I will say on my map spellbound, for the final release im working on, I'll be adding alot of pre-existing battle scars on the spaceship, wherever possible.

the more broken things you add the more r_speeds you get. On the other side, i do agree with you.

this is why we need map models

I agree that maps need more eye candy in terms of showing previous battles but it can be difficult especially with r_speed limits and entity limits. I'm going to try to put some 'battle scared' (sp?) rooms on my map but I'll have to see how the too above limits work out. I think it would be neat to have a contest for the best looking levels regardless of the r_speeds and entity limits. Kind of like the contest they had for CS a while back.

its almost impossible to use custom models, it will spike up the eploys over 2100 then. lol. I guess you could use them, but not in a hive room or the marine spawn, which generate alot of model counts.

Sometimes subtle things though. Don't need to destroy the whole place. A good example would be the broken doors and grating on Nancy... (just off the top of my head)

Bast's feed water had a very good busted look with pipes broke and water pooring... Just a couple of little things.

If you have a hallway that's low on the wpoly's and seems a bit bare... destroy it!

Yeah...uhh...is it just me, or does an NS game actually represent the fighting that had gone on at that place?

Think about it this way - who had done the fighting before the marines and the aliens had? If the aliens had, then wouldn't they be a bit more....spread out (as in infestation everywhere, hives, chambers, etc)

It just seems to me that (in the storyline), the marines come when an alien presence is first detected - npt after the alien presence had been there for quite some time.

actually dubb the tsa marines went into the ships and complexes after they lost contact with them, and when they arrive all the bodies are gone, thus i dont think the people or security guards with guns on the ships and comlexes didnt say "Come here aliens we have 1 hive for you to have and well all just stand here and let u eat us!", im pretty sure they fought for thier lives, and also who said the aliens had to be there for quite some time? they could have exterminated all of the crew and a few hours later the tsa go in. and if it was detected on the ships what happened to the guards or crew who reported the sightings before they lost contact?

That really depends on the back story the map creator decides on.

Just out of curiosity does infodecal count against the entity limit? I don't really see how, as it is statically applied to the face, but i'm not sure. If not than little bits like score marks in the metal (from claws and such) or possibly a drag mark on the floor from a broken door or something would be doable with little or no difficulty. If it counts against entities though it's not all that useful... 200 is a harsh limit.

Thats the reason why I don't like ns_veil too much. It is too plain. No broken anything, I dont think. Its too clean
  • amckernamckern Join Date: 2003-03-03 Member: 14249Members, Constellation
    to answer about info_decals

they don't count, as a player can have them off, (mp decimal limit set to 0) that shows no decals at all

also, the guidline say that puting dead/muted bodys, and bloddy marks through the map is not a good idea, as the mod is appeling to all ages, and gropus - (mum/dad switch on content protection - becuase they saw a map with guts porring out of a model)
