  Well, at the very top on the right side, there are the three hives, gray when they aren't built and yellow when they are built. Below that there could be blinking symbols, though. One of them looks kind of like a defense chamber, another like a movement chamber, and the last one like a sensory chamber. These show that you can get a defense, movement, or sensory upgrade, respectively. Once you get the upgrade, the blinking symbol will be replaced by a solid symbol indicating which upgrade you have of that type.

  These blinking icons show which upgrades are available. Simply use your rightclick menu and choose upgrades to evolve them.

  I know about the hive's ( and how many upgrades can go next to them! What I am talking about is the heart thingy and the black onos's and the no smoking signs that pop up on the RIGHT in the MIDDLE of the screen!!

  Those are symbols that represent your current upgrades. The hearts represent adrenaline, the black oni represent cloaking, and the "no smoking" sign is redemption.
  
  There are obviously 6 other symbols, but I'm not gonna bother stating them right now.
