Actually, both are correct. Octopi would be used to describe a number of octopi of the same speices, a group of mixed species would be octopuses. The word fish is the same, five tuna would be fish, but a tuna, a salmon, a swordfish, a gold fish and a flounder would be fishes.
I prefer a flock/pack/herd of onos. I started using it after reaching a conclusion in this ancient thread.
Oni sounds the best, but I can't remember having ever heard it used in a game.
Onoses seems incorrect just like Fishes where the correct plural would be Fish.
Onos makes the most sense being both plural and singular.
So I'd say I like.. Oni best idealy, but Onos is the one I use and probably will continue to use.
Isn't the most used term actually something like..
*Marine sees an Onos just outside base then wham is right there infront of him while he is just scared to death that he has no change of killing it all alone with his LMG*
*Down the voice coms he screams "SH*****T On-o s s s ahh Onos Onos Onos, for the love of god!" then silence followed by "You *****ng nub team theirs Onos outside of base" followed by the realisation that a few of his team have already found that out for themselves and have been having fun each inside an Onos stomach.*
I believe that is roughly the correct way to say that you've just encountered 1 or more Onos.

I've thought about this many times. As a student newspaper editor (with an 800 on my Writing SAT II and a 35 on my ACT English section) I think I might be able to produce a decent answer. Heck, you would hope so.
Let's look at some similar words, and how the exception-filled English language deals with them. Since we don't have a whole lot of hard-and-fast rules (Like French or Spanish) this is the only way to really know.
Cactus. Plural: Cacti Octopus. Plural: Octopi Except these end with 'us'
Nose. Plural: Noses Loss. Plural: Losses Except these have two syllables (important).
Hmmm.
Now true, there are instances where you say fishes or octopuses. But as has also been pointed out, Onos isn't from Latin, so such rules are (probably) less likely to apply.
I would tell you that Onos is both the singular and the plural form.
But that doesn't matter.
Because you still need to differentiate verbally between one giant war cow and five giant war cows. Words like 'some', 'two', or '****load' are all helpful to that effect.
But honestly, we all know that people will continue to make it up on there own -- and after all, it's a made-up root word. The real, practical answer is that nothing that is said here will change what people say. Online, people are absolutely awful about spelling and grammar. Take it from someone as anal as me: Onos is the best answer for plural form, but it's useless to think we'll ever get rid of the onos/onoses/oni.

I had one of my roomates play NS for the first time the other day. When he saw his first onos he refered to them as "big f'n ox" . Three onos in base is nothing, if you can drop mines quickly then you can kill them amidst the chaos. Three onos rushing your ha train can be bad news, since you actually have to shoot them with their messed up hit boxes to kill them.
