First open slideshow from:- start button, all programs, NS 2.0, then choose NS Slideshow Tutorial. A good way to learn about NS. Another method is to go to the section of this site that says Frontiersmen New Recruit Primer at this [WHATEVER YOU CALL IT] (<b>http://www.natural-selection.org/manual/alien.html</b>) which is part of this website. IF A MOD OR ADMIN can link this I would appreciate it, that is if you wish it to be used.
<b>It is recommended that you read this to learn the basic structure of the Marines and the Kharaa (alien race).</b>
These two methods will show you the Technical Tree, or the way to grow, from basic start up to the final upgrades. If you read either one you will have an understanding of both sides in the game. It's recommended you do this before playing because the game is full of action from the start and fellow players are usually under attack or scouting from the word go.
<b>This makes it hard and annoying if someone joins the game and asks the most simple questions that are answered by the tutorials.</b>
There are other topics and posts that will answer almost every question you have, from tactics to just running around shooting. Having read the tutorials and/or other posts (please go and read the tutorials for your own sake) either join a game and tell the team you joined you're new (they tend to be a little bit more helpful if they know you're new, usually) or start a Lan game on your computer and run a game by youself. A good way to start in my opinion as you can walk around and get a feel for the game, without worrying about being attacked or under pressure.
If you wish to start the building side of the game, so that you can see and learn what is involved, you will need to access the console. This is done by pressing the Tilde key ( next to the number one key [which looks like this ~] this simple instruction is not saying you're stupid just making it simple for all beginners, I wish someone had made it simple when I first started) you then type "sv_cheats 1" without the " marks, then press enter, to get rid of the console press the tilde key again.
This will let you build for the side you have chosen. If you chose marine, the game starts you with a commanders chair which you get in by walking up to it and you press the e or use key. You choose the item to build and place it where you are allowed. It does not automatically build the object, you have to get out of the chair and go build it, by standing near it and pressing the use key. You then go back to the comm chair and enter it and carry on until you've either learnt the way the marine building works or you're bored. The speed of the buildings in single player is a lot faster than in a real game so be warned.
If you choose the alien side you start as a skulk, this is the same as in the real game. I think you should spend some time running around as a skulk before you try other things, but it is your choice. All the aliens are different with different abilities so spend time with each of them.
When you wish to start building you must evolve into the gorge (dear old gorge). The advantage of playing on your own is you can build all three hives and all the structures so you can learn basically what is and can be done. After building all that you can, you can evolve into any of the species and learn what they do. You can also gain an idea about what some of the abilities are.
If you read some posts on the forums, you will see the advice don't go comm, this an accurate piece of advice until you are sure you can do the role, if you are a beginner comm and in a public server you will be abused for being bad at it. A good comm can win games, others lose games, get flamed and usually voted/kicked out of the comm if the game hasn't been lost.
When do you take on the role of comm? I don't know yet as I'm still new to the game and still learning the ins and outs. Although I do know that if you don't know the maps really really well, don't go comm. Please if you don't know the map don't go comm.
This is by no means a full guide just a quick, getting started guide that I think is reasonably accurate. If anyone sees any MISTAKES please let me know so I can make it accurate for anyone new reading this. I hope that everyone will like this, but warn everyone that this is only my way of seeing things.

Hey I'm the latest newbie. I hail from the frozen north that is Canada. 100% new to NS and I havent played HL online since over a year ago. Anyways I heard about this from Beast, who's been nagging at me in IRC for ages to try it out. He mentioned something about digesting marines and I was in. I'm a Tribes player at heart, but this looks like it could change my ways and I cant wait to get into it.
Well... Now i'm the newest one.. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
My Name is Joeke, I'm from the netherlands and like ns from the first time i saw it. It's such a great idea of a game to have a first person shooter AND strategy in one! I'm playing it for about a week now, but there's going to be a long time after it...
I also have a question: I tried to upload an avatar for the forum, but i get an error message that says to contact the forum members and admins???
