So I Am Joining The Marines
December 1st, I go into the United States Marine Corps.
It’s not going to be easy, but nobody said it would be.
I just finished with my "Moment of truth" where I go in and say "Yes, everything I said before is true."
After boot camp, I off to infantry school.
I have had some really good times playing natural selection. Hopefully, when I get out, this game will be even better (and maybe on HL2 )
I just wanted to say bye to everyone, hope everyone has fun without me.

My friend (who did boot camp twice, he was 3 weeks from completing it the first time and broke his leg) said that the easiest way to deal with the "mental" side of it, is to keep in mind that the instructors are all putting on a "show" (thats why they dont like it if you look them right in the eyes, it blows their cover). They arent really stuck-up a-holes who want to hurt you, they just get paid to act that way!
best of luck man, and remember teamwork works!

Catpoker, enjoy it. I know that's a bit odd to say about something like boot camp, but it's an experience, and you might as well get the best out of it.
I'm chuckling because I don't know whether Pjofsky means "don't start calling half the world hippies, commies, and teenangsters" or "don't do anything as crazy as what MonsE did for his marine buddies to give him his nickname"
[edit]That reminds me, many of you may not even remember the story...I wonder if I can find the .mp3 of the interview, that was a while back...
hey, maybe you can sign up for one of those Army.com webcasts only for the Marine Corps
Good luck to you noble sir.

Out of curiosity, what is the PT requirements in the US? It's pretty lame up here... 19 push ups, 19 sit-ups. I suck at chin ups though, but I think I can still manage the minimum 6. The run is what kills me. It's 2.4 km in under 12 minutes, and in my last orientation, all but 2 out of the 50 people who participated passed. I think I still managed to stay in the top quarter of the class, but eesh... I need some cardiovascular beefing.
I'm not really training to be a soldier, really. Just your average day mercenary. I'm in it for:
MINIMUM WAGE AND $2000 CDN ANNUALLY FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. HELL YES!

And I'd love learning some unarmed combat skills as well...
yeah, good luck at w00tcamp =]

Seems they're teaching all kinds of things in the Marines today
Just as a side note, I'm always eager to learn more about military affairs. Are the US marines a completely seperate branch of the armed forces? Do they have their own ships, vehicles and aircraft? Their own chain of command?
I considered joining the military, but my mother would (a) die and (b) I don't have the physical capacity for that kind of stuff.
And what is this Monse Path?
Good luck, even though I'm an army guy myself (My dad... :-) )
and please, oh please, don't go down the MonsE root, where he hates everything that is not himself, his wife or Flayra. and maybe alco-ma-hol every now and then
-Don't be the best. Don't be the worst. Stay in the middle. The less attention you draw to yourself the better.
-Take nothing personally. People will try to rattle you. Do what your instructors say and don't think about it.
-Did I mention not standing out?
-Oh btw. Don't stand out.
Personal memory: During training. We were expected to shout out answers and responses at the top of our lungs. Early on we tried very hard to get the correct answers and respond loud and clear.
This was a mistake. If we responded incorrectly not only did our instructor know but so did every other instructor within shouting distance >_<
Eventually, I just focused on the loud and fast response. The instructor had no idea what I said but he knew I said it loud, quickly and with confidence. (loud and proud) He moved down the line to the next victim.
The whole money for college thing sounds real nice, but the rest of it doesn't sound as fun.
Anyway, good luck man.

Good luck Catpoker, I'm sure you will do well.
