Finding Leaks

I mapped a large part of my map yesterday and then when i wanted to compile today it always gives me a leak error. It gives me the entity there is nearet to the leak and it never really give me any logic entity else than the leak is in this room. I have grid on and everything and everything is mapped by hand. (no hollow, clipping or carving tools used)

I tried loading this leak pointfile but it make any sense. Only lot's of red lines all over the screen in Worldcraft.

Are there any way to easier trace down where a leak spot is??

Try putting a box around your whole map, then put really bright lights on the outside of your map, but in the box. Then walk around and see if any light comes though. Might be good to remove some of you bright lights from the inside if you have any. Also chech that you aren't useing any func_walls as outer walls.

have a block of rougly more than half the rooms size around the half of the room
still leak error? -> leak on other side of room...

make the block 1/4 of room, check the half you know the leak is in
found leak?-> make block smaller or check where error is...

as far as i know leak errors can also occur when point entieties like lights are in the void, so check that too

I hardly use func walls in my map so far. (comes later) only for some glass here and there. I have doubble checked every place the compiler says to look.

I'll try keep tracing them down...

Thanks for the tips. I found the leak. It was actually not even near that room where the compiler said it was. I don't know why it showed me the wrong position. The error was a clipped brush that had the tiniest small gap out to the outer 'space'.

And, what lesson did we learn today?

    Always be careful with clip.
Even when you think you didn't use it, <i>(no hollow, clipping or carving tools used)</i>, it can still cause trouble <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

For future reference, you could load the pointfile if you have WorldCraft 3.5. The compiler tells you what entity is closest to the leak... that's why it was way off.

I have WorldCraft 3.3 and it can load pointfiles as well. However it can't really tell me where the leak is. It just flys all over my map and stuff. I had lot's of entities closer to the leak than the ones the compiler told me. I had a func_resource just below it and the hive next to it. But the compiler keps saying it was a ambient sounds entiry there was closest. And this was quite a bit away from the leak. Now i know i can't trust the compiler and that i have to be more carefull when using the clipping tool.

The newest beta of VHE has the ability to show the pointfile in the 3d view. It is very useful for tracking down leaks.
