damn... well i guess i wont be playin any of you in the near future....
unless by some miracle i can get broadband in the boonies...
lunixmonster! why hast thou forsaken me!?!?!
And I dont think it was that hard on my 56k line. You might wanna give it another go when NS 3.0 comes around, Im sure Valve would at least try to make play acceptable with a phone line.
They cache the data and thats whats screwing it up apparently.
We are all owned into doing Valves beta testing for multiplayer mods for HL 2
I have yet to see a game released by serria that was actually finished. They are cheap **** that get the public to test thier software for them.
Its a 5 year old game FFS leave it alone.
I Love HL.
I have been playing half life mods since cs beta.
I am just **** off that they added stupid software
If it aint broke dont fix it.
Jesus, you can't go on saying that forever, there are things that aren't broken but need improvements.
For instance, NS wasn't broken in 1.04, there were lots of people who still love it (and still are), but 2.(0)1 is an improvement. Do you seriously think that NS would become half of what it is today if the developers just sat back, drank beer, and said, "It's not broken, don't fix it"?!?!?!?!
Steam is an improvement, too, people need to take time and listen to the fixes (like that #whatever error. I told thousands of people the solution, but they continued to whine about how VALVe was retarded), then it wouldn't be half as bad.
[edit] Steam is coming, whether VALVe is dumb or not. Just try to accept it, and like... stop whining... [/edit]
Steam is GOOD
STEAM IS NOW!
Get use to it!
What a quick and easy method?
Click Start > Run
Clear out the box and type in "msconfig"
Click Ok, the System Configuration Utility should come up.
Under the General tab change your system from "Normal Startup" to "Selective Startup"
Looking further down the list of items, depending on your OS is will say either "Load Startup Group Items" or "Load Startup Items"
Remove the checkmark next to that option.
Click Apply, then Close/Ok.
Reboot your system.
Try installing and updating Steam now. Unless your system is seriously screwed, it should go in fine.
Ok guys, I'm gonna go on a bit ofrant here, because I think many of ye are stupid.
First off- steam works for 60% of its users better than WON.
Secondly- Don't bash steam just because your too much of a ingrate to get it working. The ONLY reason I see to bash steam, is because you have 56k and won't be able to play anymore.
And lastly- Don't flame me for this, because this isn't a flame. Its a promise, and a fact. Not many people in the HL community can't get it working. Many of those who can't get it working either A: Know how to launch programs, hit their 'esc' key, and **** using those other lettered keyes, B: Have computers that run HL at 0-5 fps and expect broadband internet is all they need to make it better, so tehy bash steam for forcing them to spend 50 bucks by upgrading, and C: Have a legitimate problem. Throughout my long running with steam, I could always get it working, even back on 56k. IT was slow as hell then, but it worked. Now, its a bit slower, but I connect to games faster(5-7 seconds), and can search servers faster and better.
And BTW- my PC isn't a super computer. P4 2.0ghz, 256SDRAM, Motherboard based 64MB video card, no sound card, 60gb, and a few other sucky items. And my ol', 400mhz, 64MBSDRAM, Voodoo 3, no soundcard PC runs it fine too. So mnyeh!
The Cache files are not really a problem, the are all so small, if they have any large ones, they would have been a large update for WON aswell and taken for ever with 56K to begin with.
Imagine that... an exploit is discovered, Flayra codes a fix, tosses it up to Steam, who sends it to everyone (and every server) playing. Boom, the next day, that exploit exists no more. We might actually see minor-revision numbers for NS again, too.
In short, on Steam. It had a rocky start. Wonderful. I'm sure that most of those complaining weren't around for WON's startup. It was LOADS worse than Steam is now... not being able to play online for a week or two at a time was a common occurrence.
And as to 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it'... WON *is* broken. WON belongs to Sierra, not VALVe. Steam is VALVe's baby. They now have direct access to their key database (which they did *not* have under WON), and can change it as they see fit. Sierra is no longer their publisher, and HL is the _only_ thing still using WON for authentication. The servers are old and tired. It's time to put them out of their misery, and go to a better solution.
As for the 56Kers. As *if* you had it any easier downloading mods under WON? It's all the same amount of data. Just Steam will do it when you aren't looking, so it'll be there and ready much more easily. Sure, it's designed toward being a broadband delivery system. But that doesn't mean that it harms 56K users at all, when they're downloading the stuff anyway.
As for downloads - yes the initial download is huge. But personally I'd rather have one large download (which i got from work so no waiting 8 hours for me yay) and then many small, tiny, easy to download patches after that on my 56k connection.
And as for this comment:

I didnt know that publishers made games (unless they do ) But anyway - what company has ever released a 'finished' game comparable to half-life's size that never required patches or improvements o_O
However, I'm still stuck on a dial up modem for now and steam doesn't really agree with it so I was wondering if there was some information somewhere about optimizing steam for my dial up or optimizing my dial up for steam.

I suppose its in Australia, maybe Ill ask my friend later to send a complaint letter to them, capiche?
As for Steam, well, we have to move to Steam someday. So yeah, I guess VALVe followed what NS did.
It evolved.
But I feel sorry for those with 56k, I mean, theyre on 56k and WON was friendly, but now they have to DL a big installer, then install, then install some Steam updates....hopefully you can cut down the time if you have a friend with the Steam full cache, Broadband and a CDRW drive
telstra used to have a steam content server but (this is so funny) it broke and valve didn't even return their emails. so it was taken down. this is the bit where the smart people shine... they have refused to put the server back till valve fixes their software and makes it so telstra customers can connect to only the telstra server so its free.
VALVe's PR record is incredible compared to a lot of companies, and only since steam has their reputaion gone down, and thats because of one thing that they STILL don't understand(and niether do I)-
Counterstrike went open beta, allowed for anyone who d/led steam(which was only 750kb), 1.6 version, and only a extra 3,000 people got steam, when it became open beta. Then, it goes official, and they think the same thing is more or less gonna happen.
Instead, half the damned community all comes at once. VALVe's servers, and the original servers, didn't have a chance. Within 5 hours of release, 6 of 20 servers crashed, and needed PHYSICAL maintenence just to get back(BIGTIME overload). The other servers were very close to bad shape. Not to mention, a small glitch sneaked into the system, only problem is, that small glitched used the domino effect- 1 taking many. And because of 1 failure, it made many other failures.
In the end(aka, now), everything works. We just have stubborn idiots bashing steam.
