Voice Communication

<div class="IPBDescription">recomended hardware?</div> I would like to improve at NS and a major step in that direction is communication. Can anyone recomend a good setup. I'm thinking baout getting the sidewinder Game voice is that any good?

You don't actually need any software since Half-Life and Half-Life steam already incorporated voice technology in the games ( Take that, Ut2k3).

All you ned is a microphone, and then just hold down the "+voicerecord" button to talk. I believe you can configure and even improve voice comm in the steam menu.

Thanks for the quick reply. At the moment all I have a little microphone attached to a wand - no good for gaming. I wan to order something tonight, either the game voice thing or a fairly good set of headphones with mic built in. Just wondered what people are using. Especially interested if they use the game voice or similar.

Well, I'm going to buy a new headset tonight ( this one broke ;/), and I suggest you buy the "big" headsets, as they seem more stable. The mic is best when bendy, so you can adjust it to be near your mouth.

i have the sidewinder one you are considering and don't particularly like it.

It's definitely cheap. steamedham has the Sennheiser pc150's which look really good and you should be able to get for 40 US, I'm probably going to buy a pair of those when my headset finally dies.

The mic no longer stays in place and it's basically waiting to die, and its not even that old.

I'm from the UK so the Cyber acoustics heaphones aren't avaiable - I have tried that style before and prefer my headphones to enclose me ears if possible. For the game voice - Like CHAMOIS said I think the headphones look a little flimsy. The Sennheiser are definatley good headphones. My wife's brother DJ's and he has a pair (a much more expensive set!). I only want to spend £30 ish pounds. I will look around and find something nice - ta for the advise.

I use Plantronics DSP-500's. Either these or the Audio .90's are great headsets with great attached mics.

Sold - am just going to order the plantronic Audio 90's and an audigy sound card (replace my onboard sound). The DSP-500's looked sweet but a little bit more than I want to spend.

An Audio .90 is a great set and is what I use. The sound and the mic are great.

BUT

I hope you have a warrant because they are possible to break easily.

I hope you have a warrant because they are possible to break easily. I'm on my third one. They usually die in about a month or two! I'm warrantied though, so I could care less about getting it replaced.

I use a cheap and nasty headset which cost me 15 GPB (£), quality isnt too bad, and everyone can hear me perfectly fine. Just get whatever, it doesnt really matter, anything will work. I used to use a wand like you have at the moment which cost me a fiver heh, that was less than ideal though.

I use the regular mic that came with my comp, and never had a problem and people can hear me crystal clear. I have a Klipsch 5.1 system I use when my parents aren't around (400 watts of fraggin power). I use to have a good set of headphones, but after continuously running the cord over with my chair one ear doesn't work :\.

Headphones are best since you don't get the background of other people talking and youreslef playing.

I use a $25 headphone/mic combo from walmart and it does a great job.

The microphone can be as cheap as you want it to be, the quality of the mic isn't gonna make to much of a difference because of the bandwidth restriction on the mic transmition--so dont be goin out and blowing $100 on a mic. A $100 mic is gonna sound as good as a $10 mic over the current transmition set up for HL engine.
