How Do You Use Devour?

Is it a probability thing?
When I play as onos, I usually gore the enemies to death, because many times I go up to a stomped marine, and try to devour, but end up wasting all my energy on nothing and getting killed by his buddies.

I'd like to be able to devour marines, but it only works about 1/3 of the time. How do you effectively devour marines?

You point and shoot. The trouble is aiming at the right place: the game can be picky about what counts as a hit. It will always succeed if you aim right.

The range is further than you would think, so don't worry about that too much. I've been pretty successful aiming at the marine's torso, so give that a shot. Ducking might help, but I make no promises.

If you want to practice, you could always cut a small piece of masking tape into a 3-5 millimeter circle and putting it on your monitor in the center. You can find the center if you apply the tape while playing as something with a crosshair / reticule. It's sorta lame, but I remember doing it once years ago with a halflife mod that didn't have a reticule for a precision weapon due to a bug.

As pointed out many many many times, AIM AT THE MARINES FEET.

You'll find you devour more. Failing that, CROUCH AND AIM NORMALLY.

TBH I don't even waste time with stomp now, its more useful for trying to make a getaway as opposed to letting every marine for a mile know that an onos is around. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

aim the tip of the horn at his feet. and make sure you have enough energy left to stomp/gore him if you miss.

You can easily use a crosshair so don't bother with tape . I used a crosshair and practiced a bit with bots(in tourny mode with the bots not being able to hurt me), the tip of the horn is not center of the screen, don't get to close to marines or it wont work(IE dont push against the marines), you have a LONG reach with devour .

To use crosshairs, go to Half-Life\ns\sprites, select the weapon_devour.txt file, copy it and rename it to weapon_devour.txt.old(or anything easy to remember, pepsi-cola.txt is a very bad name for obvious reasons, you are likely to forget what it was or have trouble finding the backup).

If you want to use the pistol crosshairs open the file weapon_pistol.txt and copy paste the content of this file into the weapon_devour.txt file overwriting everything that was their previously. Devour will now use the pistol crosshairs.

When you want to stop using crosshairs for devour, delete the file weapon_devour.txt and rename your backup to weapon_devour.txt.

Don't press all the way up to the marine, keep a little range, like 1m.

If you do that you essentially aim the center of the screen on the middle of the marine and slightly to one side.

The thing about aiming Devour isn't so much that you need to aim downward, as that it has a minimum range that aiming downward can cover. All you need is a small gap.

hmm... i remember that i was onos rampaging in rine start on eclipse. after a raid i ran to da exit but a rine jumped in my way. i pressed myself into him (actually he jumped in my way so we were pressing against each other), aimed at his face, and devoured him. i gained a meal, **** off da rines, and made a sucessful and stylish escape.
