Nice mod

Very interesting game... I just stumbled across it from Penny Arcade. Just wondering though, were the designers influenced by Gloom at all? It's remarkably similar, but seems to be a good adaptation. All in all, I'm looking forward to the release (so maybe I can finally get Quake2 off my hard drive)

take a look

Wow. I wish I had been active in Quake 2. That looked like an awesome mod. The similarities with that and NS are striking. Of course, the ideas of both games are pulled from TF/TFC for the most part. The key with NS though is the involvment of the commander.

I'd be very suprised if there wasn't any influence between Gloom and NS.

NS is a great mod (why do you think were all here!) It was inspired by gloom somewhat, but also by Aliens etc all the best bits came together to form NS!

Welcome!! Flayra, NS's lead designer, was of course inspired by things like Gloom, AvP, the Aliens movies, and many others... but NS is fundamentally unique. The commander, the carefully balanced weapons and classes... there is also a *strong* emphasis on teamplay, which I've been told Gloom lacked. Anyway, stick around; NS will be out soon!

I also believe Starcraft was a big inspiration to NS as well, as could be easily guessed. But I still say Flayra should ditch those sissy aliens and make a real foe: Orcs!

Nice mod? NICE MOD? Yes it is actually, isn't it?

Welcome to the NS community, Dixie!

Gloom is still being played, if you're interested in trying it out.

But NS appears to address many of the gripes that people had with gloom, and refines the gameplay quite a bit (with the addition of the commander, ect.) I look foreward to playing it.

Gloom, now that was a fine mod...

When I first came to the Natural Selection Forum I shrieked, the lowest of the newbies were called hatchlings, something I had not seen since the Gloom age. I encourage everyone to give it a try, a few sad sacks still play that crazy game.

I remeber Starcraft Alpha 1 (they started the game twice&#33. It was on the Warcraft II engine and it LOOKED it. 100% Orcs in Space. After seeing the limitations of the War2 engine, Blizz scrapped it and made a brand new one. It took 1 guy a month to write. As I has once mentioned, I first latched onto this game because of its similarities to Gloom. Flayra, the project lead, has actually came on several times to acknowledge that Gloom was a big influence. But so was the Aliens series , Aliens vs Predator, Quake, Half-Life, and Starcraft. And then Natural Selection slaps them all on the nose with a baseball bat, laughs evilly, and runs off, screaming into the night.

Natural Selection has a similarity in that they both aliens and humans, but this is not a class-based team-DM mod that rewards rambo tactics. Read what you can find, but there are several differences. The teams are greatly varied in their manner of play, and this is a game that rewards the team only, and not individual players. If you want that heavy machine gun, follow the Commander's orders. If you want to upgrade to a Lerk, try and help your team collect some resources. Killing marines might help, but someone needs to build that collector. The more I read about this game, the more I realize the brilliance the designers had in ensuring that teamplay was assured and encouraged. This game is truly a Real-Time Strategy game with a first-person shooter front-end.

And, for whatever reason, Flayra has gnoe nuts, and is giving this to the community for free. Still, I'm ready to buy Flayra a nice steak dinner whenever I get a chance...

    Welcome to the community.

    -Ryan!

Ahm, Flayra's a vegetarian hippie. So maybe a nice broiled celery stick with a dash of LSD dinner would be more appropriate.

    Come one come all newbies!

    LOL @ "dash of LSD".

I find it humurous that Flayra is a vegetarian. As he made a mod that is possibly going to be the most gory, inhumane, ungodly violent mod out there. That's good, btw. But still kinda funny.

I hate to pp on your parade, but if I'm not mistaken NS isn't that much more gory than Half-Life(Actually, it may be less gory?).
  • UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
I believe that NS is a "family" mod and that gore is not really high. I would say NS has CS's amount of gore (almost none).

I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants.

And yes, gore is kept to a minimum. Less than Half-Life itself, I believe. But no gore doesn't make it any less creepy.

Why would anyone ever do that does it add to the fun or playability of the game?

these forums are much better than rphl, someone who would post a post saying "Nice mod" would be totally flamed there. I think i like this place...
  • Outlaw_StarOutlaw_Star Join Date: 2002-09-14 Member: 1314Members
    Well then No.

You asked me if it would add to the fun or playability of the game, and i said yes. There was no question asking for a reason on to why i believe that. Now that i have been asked, in a way, i will tell.

I enjoy more blood because "it add(s) to the fun or playability of the game."

    Thankyou.

(psst for you MOO, since u might not get my copy & pasting, realisimn, eye candy, and its funny.)

Don't do what you did on the RPHL Forums then Flea and you won't get flamed.

I was there, as you can see.

Well, blood splatter might be realisitc, it doesn't really add to the fun, in my opinion. It can be funny at times, as in, "Man, look at this room, there must have been soooooooome battle going on!" Or like some psychological testing, "What does this blood stain look like to you?" "A butterfly." But it doesn't at a whole lot of atmosphere that a good mapper can't put in with something as simple as a flickering or swinging light. Eye candy, maybe, but if it were bloody, it's not something I would want my little brother playing. And that's something big I like about this mod...I might be able to let my brother play it with me.

I respect the fact that the dev team made the decision to reduce gore. But, hey, to each his own. I hope, I expect, that you will be too busy checking the dark corners for ambushes to mind the lack of blood splatters.

And, pardon my ignorance, but what, exactly, is RPHL? Thanks.

    -Ryan!

Um, its better this way anyway. No gore, standard. 3rd party mod, adds on your comp. Your a intelligent man, you should have made that connection.

Satsified customers love scalable details on visuals.

Gore slider? Parental lock out? Why its all been done before, and has its pratical uses.

Now don't go into permission needed, blah blah, whatever. Its all noted, talked about, and evident in my wording.

Moo doesn't like being qouted toyed with. :sidenote:
