How To Deal With Shotgunners

coriscoris Join Date: 2003-07-08 Member: 18034Members, Constellation
Well, this is a question to all the NS "elites", how am I supposed to counter a marine with a shotgun? Even if I get close up to him and i can get one or two bites on him, after that I'm screwed. If the player isnt totally worthless he will simply turn around and fire one shot, and BANG Im dead.

This is getting really annoying, and I need every tip I can get on hwo to counter shotguns.

circle strafe him, and after everyone of his shotgun blasts, change directions or a do a little shuffle/juke move to throw off their next shot, if worse comes to worse, get a bite in on him, then run away. There is no rule in NS that says you have to finish every fight you start, few people understand that.

Charge like a mad skulk (charging a shotgunner in a corner is quite mad, if you ask me), jumping and strafing, and pray for the best.

Or you could just parasite him to death from across the room. Helps if you have regen. Hur hur hur.

if you can get up close, just strafe back and forth - it is hard to shoot at something that makes sharp turns like that.

parasite him and wait for him to move. There is no rule in NS that says you have to go after people either. Even fewer people understand that one.

Always parasite them before you attack, if they aren't already. It doesn't help anyone else on your team if they come around the corner and get their body blown in half. Basically if you know theres a shotgunner somewhere, and you haven't allowed him to see you yet, W A L K. Try to get on the cieling if you have to, and drop down on him. Chances are if you can get the drop on him, and at least get 1 bite in before he knows whats happening, you will win the fight.

Sneak him for at least one free bite, it'll soften him up for any other passing aliens if he's not medspammed.

If you can't sneak him, at least draw his fire so a teammate can sneak him from behind (good for group fighting)

Failing that, para and chuckle, then walk off. As long as he's got his back to a wall and is crouched looking for you, you can wander off to nibble his lesser equipped mates or any nearby rt.

problem is- no one here has touched on the real problem that there IS NO counter to a good marine shotgunner. He wont miss, you wont even get close to him ....

the counter is a better skulk that can dodge. Even the best players miss, and part of that is how well one dodges with as a skulk.

1 skulk with no leap vs 1 shotgunning marine. the skulk should ushally lose meaning that you shouldn prolly wait for backup befor eyou attack unless you have a good ambush.
  • BuglerBugler Join Date: 2003-09-04 Member: 20561Members
you dont get it- the variable is the skill of the marine. Givin the best skulk in the world, it doesnt matter if the marine can always hit him.
  • BugBrainBugBrain Join Date: 2003-05-14 Member: 16279Members
Parasite him, call for backup. If it's a group of them, I.E. shotty rush, I personally would not engage at all unless I had lerk backup. At least until 3.0. No lerk spike<shottie rush.
  • FrostyFrosty Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15667Members
lerk spikes work great as long as u stay at range. any range weapon works vs shoty in vent (i killed a HA with spike with taking only like 10-20 damage (which was regened away) cus almost all the peleits hit the wall, so any ranged alien weapon will get a marine (they go so slow in vents)

if its an unupgraded shoty (aka the rush or early shoties) then full cara will let a skulk life a shot (i lived through a point blank shot, had like 5 hp left but i lived and killed him for the second. it might ahve been lvl 1 shoty but i think it was lvl0)

personaly i use celerity and out dodge them.

though i have herd good things about sneeky silence, they will die before they realize they are being bit from behind, (ns players, espeiclay the good ones, depend on audio cues)

    silence. silence, silence, silence.
  • PhinPhin Join Date: 2003-11-11 Member: 22556Members, Constellation
A bit of teamwork can go a long way. =) Have a couple of skulks strafe-jump-charge him from the front, while another skulk comes up from behind and starts nibblin' on his ankles. Or simply all ambush him at the same time, coming from different different directions.

If it's 1vs1 then don't bother; As other people have said, just parasite him and run away.

If it's a shotgun rush then have your whole team attack from all sides constantly, jumping about inbetween them and biting whoever you can. They'll find it much harder to hit you, and if ff is on you might see a couple of rine TKs.

Remember, alien teamwork > everything. :P

If I can't kill a shotgunner with an alien, then its probably because I'm using the wrong one for the job.

I don't expect a Marine with a CQB weapon to be easily killed by a skulk. I expect him to win, or draw.

Likewise, I see the fade as a terror trooper, lightly armoured unless suitable carapaced up. He's a hit and runner. If he's got no upgrades and is standing infront of a rine, he deserves to fry.

I don't think its unbalanced - as evidenced by seeing fade players rape through a shotty team using something as basic as silence and cara.

this is quite obvious but da counter to shotgunners is oni.u go in, stomp them from across da room, and eat them. failing that get a lerk ans spore/spike his **** till he muves then kill him. gorge gangs also work nicely against shotgunners. if da worst cums to worst, para kill him.

Against good marines with a lmg, and shotgunners: don't charge them head on. Parasite them and wait for them to get closer, wait for backup, or ambush.

heres my tried and true method - silence and para.

para them and run. now you know exactly where they are and they have no clue where you are. wait someplace where they're not gonna look. i like halfway up the wall (bout head level) cause nub marines look forward and good marines look up (i.e. above the doorway). when they come by (you'll know exactly when by the para), CHOMP CHOMP. no more sger. ~

Wow. A simply retarded rine. Lousy comm too. Thanks for the story about the lerking.

Unupgraded shotty deals 160. It takes 160 dmg. To kill a lv3 carapace skulk vs unupgraded weaponry, or 1 shotgun shot- One pellet missed, apparently.

QUOTE

this is quite obvious but da counter to shotgunners is oni.u go in, stomp them from across da room, and eat them. failing that get a lerk ans spore/spike his **** till he muves then kill him. gorge gangs also work nicely against shotgunners. if da worst cums to worst, para kill him.

Well. Gee, never woulda guessed an ONOS could kill a shotgunner. I mean, onos are cheap, easy to come by, and quick to get. Along with that 2nd hive for your stomp. And funny how you say gorge gangs work against shotgunners- it's quite the opposite (I.E. you cannot heal fast enough.) And I like how your lerk strat involves the deep "kill him" line of thinking. I mean, I'm sure no one woulda figured that out. OOOOH yeah, lets not forget parasite, such a viable weapon because most rines don't have pistols or wepon upgrades, are ALWAYS a mile away, have retarded commanders that don't believe in medpacks, and are overall incompitant fools.

While a good shotgunner should NEVER die to any lone alien aside an onos, or a clever fade... All you can really do is rely on good bunnyhopping skill, (Not jump mashing mind you, figure out what bunnyhopping is before replying if you don't know) and teamwork. Fighting a half decent shotgunner means you're dead in 1-3 shots, depending on distance/upgrades.

Now that we've covered how to kill a lone shotguner, howabout you think about something such as... a TEAM of shotgunners?

Once again, teamwork, clever fades (As in ones that know that redempt fade is useless along with carapace and understand this little known ablility, "blink,") some good skulking and intelligent teamwork.

Stratigy > "MAKE HIM MISS TAHN PARA KILLZ AND GO FUR ONOS"

Sorry if that seems harsh to anyone. Simply the truth, though.

(and yes, scilence skulks are a nice way to take out shotgunners.)
  • StoneburgStoneburg Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8174Members
Lerks are definetely the "counter" to shotguns. As skulk, silence/cloaking/carapace would be the upgrades that gives you the best shot, but definetely not a "counter". Shotguns are for killing skulks and they're very good at it, so if you can, don't be a skulk.
  • BallistoBallisto Join Date: 2003-05-19 Member: 16503Members
nge not only are you flamer, you're stupid too. we arent talking about para kills. we're talking about paraing the marine so you know where he is. the key to killing a shotgunner is SURPRISE. and the best way to have surprise is to know exactly where he is.

but i agree... is obviously a counter, like saying in sc use ultralisks to counter marine rushes. but actually shotguns shred a one-hive onos.

and to take out a TEAM of shotgunners? a TEAM of aliens!! best way is to have half in front with celerity running everywhere and distracting the marines while your buddies with silence come up behind them and bite them. and of course they should all be paraed so you know where they are

and on pubs? the best you can do is when one of your teammates runs at them, they'll be fighting, and then reloading when you strike. its a sun tzu kind of thinking... hit them when they're weakest. shotgunners (or any marine) are weakest when they have their backs turned or are reloading.

and its spelled strategy (e not an i)
  • predatory_kangaroopredatory_kangaroo Join Date: 2003-01-12 Member: 12225Members
My favourite way can take a while.
It involves parasiting him, then retreating to an acceptable distance until he starts to move away.
Then take the high road and shadow him for as long as it takes, using the roof.
Never strafe while on the roof, it only makes more noise and slows you down (the shortest path from A to B is a straight line).
If you start taking damage, drop down and chomp the shotgunner as much as possible, it might just be an LMGer or pistoler behind you.
If he turns around, remember - he might not have seen you, so move as quickly as possible to directly above him, drop and BITE.

These techniques are a pretty good way of avoiding death, and silence is optional but a definite plus.
On the other hand, it's important to remember that it's always hard to kill a shotgunner, so you if it's convenient (ie you have enough res and they're not attacking the hive), it's a good idea to evolve a bit before you attack.
  • BallistoBallisto Join Date: 2003-05-19 Member: 16503Members
just a thought... a sger has to kill ~5 skulks to make the investment pay off. if you can get him in 2 tries, its well worth it.

    Leap and blink kill shotgunners.
Leap or blink behind them and get in a bite/slash. Run. Repeat.

Hit them from multiple directions. (omg teamwork)

Count how many shells they use and attack when they're reloading.

Don't move straight at them or you're giving them a free kill.

    Yup.

Silence, TEAMWORK H4X (OMG!), and patience.
Get another skulk to draw his fire, run him under a vent or doorway, then you pop out with silence and bite his head off.. simple but effective..

And if hes on the side of the room, para him and run away, chances are he will follow you
