I cant really explain this mod in words.... its completley amazing. I read an article ( <a href="http://www.3dactionplanet.com/features/articles/tenebrae/" target="_blank">http://www.3dactionplanet.com/features/articles/tenebrae/</a> ) about it.... an I couldn't beleive it. It takes the Quake 1 engine and adds Bumb mapping, realtime shadows and lighting, smoother animation... and more. Things we expect to see in Doom 3. If you want a fix of the scary Doom 3 atmosphere without pirating an alpha (wheeee!<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> ((kidding, pirating is bad, mmkay?)), dust off your Quake 1 disk, and hook in this mod. I swear to god I think I wet my pants again and again going through the first campaign (This mod works for the shareware Quake also, in case you dont own it.) What does this Mean for HL? HL is a vastly improved Quake 1 engine... What if someone decides to do this to HL? It could expand its lifetime dramatically, just because of the graphical sophistication added. Sorry if I'm boring you Players, but (I would think) for Us modders its VEEEERRRY interesting....

Screens of the next version (to be released soon)
2nd screen reminds me of the HL engine,..with bumpmapping, that would be a cool feature for ns <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
On the other hand, if you want to test out your new shiny GF 3 or 4's bump mapping and lighting abilities, it's a good a place as any to start.

WOA can't believe this is Q1... they shoud really do this with the HL engine

I think they main thing that brings it down is the textures. Everything looks really new and good, and then theres textures on the wall that look horrible
I'd love to see this stuff put in Quake 2 myself...
Heck, Q3 engine will probably be open source by 2005. :P
I thought that you could D/load the Q3 source as long as you wern't going to sell what you made.......
You are thinking of the mod source, which is only just enough to make changes to gameplay. It does not include the full engine source, where you can change things like BSP properties, how light is rendered, the network code, things like that.
A few years ago Quake 1 was fully open-sourced, which means that the entire code, engine and everything, is available under the GPL liscense. More recently, Carmack has open-sourced Quake 2's engine. I think that by 2005 will definately have already seen the Quake 3 engine source, because John Carmack is a big big supporter of the open source movement. Maybe we can get DOOM III source in 2009 ^_^
