Actually, one person staying in base welding everything can be the difference between a marine win and loss. Think of it this way: it's easier to destroy a building that has been damaged before, than one that is at 100% health. A repairman marine can also make hit-and-run attacks pointless.

You're making sure they have a place to go to for their upgrades, where they can safely respawn in (well, until you're about to be defeated anyway) and giving them someone to help defend the vital structures to take down hives.
See yourself more as a medic. If anyone has a problem with that, then it's their problem. The game is about teamwork and this goes further than just a bunch full of Rambos.
If half your buildings are in the yellow, YES I think it's important there is at least one marine that runs around and welds everything. Ditto if we're sieging a hive and we need to hold an outpost - having a marine that focuses on keeping the TF and turrets repaired is a big help.
also in early caming guard duty, you can more often than not convince teh Com to drop you a shottie to go with that welder. You can rack up some mad kills with an early shot and a well defended out post, if the skulks try rushing.
On more organised Clan matches, you will quite often see a "Base Monkey" running around repairing structures, building the arms lab, while the rest of the team run off and siege the hive. They can be the difference between winning and losing, even on pubs.
Well, thank you guys. It's helped me a little. I'm so used to being an engy and a defender in other games, I felt like I got some flak for doing the same in this game.
If people do give you flacl, unless it's from the commander, ignore it. They are usually lamers who dont even know how to spell teamwork. If the commander is shouting at everybody to go through the phase gate because they are attacking the other end, go through it. Being a base monkey is not just sitting in base for the whole game, you have to know when to get your butt in gear and help out on the field.

This can't be stressed enough:
On our server, being assigned base guard is one of the highest honors a comm can bestow on a marine. Not always, but often.. it is the most important role a marine can play. It requires skill, dedication, focus, and patience in surprisingly the same manner that the other marine roles do.
What server would that be? After I get my computer back from the repair place (it took them a month last time, and they didn't fix the damn problem... sheesh) I think I'd like to visit a server like that.
[EDIT]: now that I have my contacts in I can read his sig. NM.

No matter which game it was, I normally took the healer role. Even when I used to LARP, I took some healing ability (UKers, who know the LARP system "Realm", will know that Supernaturalists were useless until later levels, spending points on abilities rather than armour and weapons, so the ability to at least heal yourself, and your team, was an important pick to take from the Healer skills). This made me one of the most sort after characters because I did the job well because I knew how to keep the fighters and spell casters alive which, in turn, meant that I was also defended and kept alive.
You are doing the same. But, as pointed out by others, there are occasions when you will have leave the base to complete some task. However, if you help defend your team, because of the skills you have, they should see that (those who actually look at the teamwork from others rather than only see their own achievements) and help defend you with their skills.
Good luck - and I hope to see your skills some day.
Well, if I'm a marine, I'm either the talky squad leader type herding the cats and trying to convince the comm I've got a good plan, or the maintenance guy. Which one do you think most comms like more? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
PS: One thing I should hasten to add is that if you intend to be a maintenance guy, it's important to treat any place your team has a phase gate to as a part of your main base. Make regular patrol checks there when nothing is happening in 'rine start. You're often going to be the only eyes any place that doesn't have extensive turret cover has.
