Whats the best?
Ok... I see that anime is spreading everywhere. I think its pathetic and meant for 6 year olds, until I saw Infinitums post
claiming some anime has Juno Reactor in it. This made me want to at least have a look at it. I did a BT search (am I allowed to say that?)
and came up with nothing.
Soooo... I downloaded some of that Naruto thingy that everyone seems to like, and ended up almost killing myself.
If you hapen to know of some GOOD anime (NOT like Dragon Ball Z or that Naruto POS) please let me know.

outlaw star
cowboy bebop
the animatrix
tenchi (the original, unedited 1's that were dubbed rather than re-animated to suit the mouth movement. the americans cut alot out and made it really confusing)
Other than that, all I can think of is FLCL. But you probably wouldn't like that, its...well, confusing, and most people who like western stuff hate it because they don't understand it.
I don't watch anime, but as anime fans would have said, everything is good.
Personally I like the animatrix (only watched the first 2 episodes tho)
And no I still havn't read the manga, Inf.
Ghost in the Shell
AKIRA
->My favourites ^^
Edit: Oh, I just remembered the one other anime I've liked
Blue Gender, I thought it was good.
Armitage
Hellsing
Cowboy Bebop
Akira
There are others, but those are the top ones that I can remember at the moment.
#1: Trigun
'Nuff said. Trigun is the best cartoon I have ever seen on so many levels it's unbelievable.
#2: Love Hina
Really well written, really funny.
#3: Excel Saga
Most mind blowingly bizaare thing you will ever see. Strange beyond comprehention.

That's all for now. Then go to Ninja Scroll.

Yeah. I don't usually like anime very much. Most just suck, few are watchable and Hellsing was one that I actually enjoyed at some level. It's not perfect but it has some stylish crap, I have to admit.
The reason I loathe anime is that everyone just acts so f***ing irrationally and everyone yells all the time.
"WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE SOME TEA!?!=!?!?"
"OH YES I'D LOVE SOME!!!"
And what's up with people crying and shaking dramatically when there is no reason, not for normal people? Oh, and when I'm looking at a action-anime-movie I don't need to see their panties. What the hell is this obsession with women in anime showing their panties in variety of ways? Example: Animatrix. Why doesn't the woman have pants on while inside the construction-program? Or if someone plays outside football(european one), she is wearing only a t-shirt and panties. WHY THE HELL WON'T THEY PUT THEIR PANTS ON!? I'm not so horny that I need to see 15years old big-eyed cartoon girls' panties every 5mins.
/rant
Why is everyone looking at me? Uh, is this anime fan thread? I think I...I need to be somewhere else...

Seems you've watched too much Excel saga.
from personal viewing you MUST watch cowboy bebop.
I rewatched again recently, the last two episodes really get to me *weep* (the star fading after the credits; class)
and uhhh ...i know where you live, and ill be checking up on you in 6 weeks, if you havent watched it by then you can expect some trouble.
i have really limited knowledge of anime tbh, I grew up on the random cheesy stuff you find in places like HMV (ie. wicked city and the like) which is probably why bebop stands out so much for me..

too right... its even better when u get the dvd and watch the final fight scene skipping between slow-mo and real time
If you want to watch a good, non DBZ ish anime, start with the Ghost in the Shell movie.
Its common enough that you should be able to rent it at your local rental joint, or even borrow from the library.
Watch it, and no more bitching about anime.
Chobits:
Romantic comedy, really cute, f***ing excellent all round. A must watch.
Trigun:
If you've not watched this, you should be shot.
One Piece:
Epic length anime tv show about pirates, it's really funny and has great action.
Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha):
Drama / comedy, absolutely fantastic although Sana-chan's fast talking is a bit hard to follow. Funny and sentimental.
Great Teacher Onizuka:
Funny comedy / drama about an ex-gang member who takes up teaching. Cue hillarious concequences. But seriously, this anime is fantastic.
I seen 4 really good animemoives.
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Evangelion. (Ending part)
Ghost in the shell (Not as good as i expected tho)

Dread, I agree with you 80%. I say 80% rather than 100% because I haven't really seen enough anime to comment yet (i.e, STILL haven't seen a series the whole way through), but from the bits and pieces i've seen so far, all of the laws of anime seem to apply.
(just click it)
*edit* And also this. I don't get some of <-- those ones, which is probably a good thing *edit*

I agree you should watch this anime. It's like the most damned hilarious anime ever made and theres countless parodies in it too.
*thinks about the dating game episode then starts rofl*
I recently saw FLCL, several times. 90% of the show went over my head (several times), and I don't give a damn - FLCL rocks. Trigun is also great. (Jesus with a six-shooter - need I say more? ) Other essentials include Outlaw Star, and of course, Cowboy Bebop.

You probably simply don't like DBZ and Naruto because they're pretty similar in that they have
A: Typical anime humor
B: Lots of fighting (Though Naruto is a lot better on the fighting part than DBZ)
Don't classify anime as "anime". Classify it like a movie. There's Romance, Comedy, Action, Drama, etc. etc. etc.
Cowboy Bebop is a more seroius one, and you'll probably enjoy that more than things such as Naruto (Since I doubt anyone serious will like characters such as Naruto himself or Sakura)
Trigun will seem stupid at first as well, but it gradually gets more serious, so if you can handle it, get it.
And no one has mentioned the anime Scryed. It doesn't seem very serious at first, but I was hooked after the first two episodes. Finished the whole series in two days.
If you like Love Hina, you'd probably like Chobits as well. Actually, you might like Chobits better if the you're really into a futuristic setting.
Hokai. It depends what you're after. There are several genres of anime:
1: Mahou Shojo (literally: "Magical young girl"). Probably not your thing.
2: Teen romance drama crap. Again, probably not your thing.
3: Mecha (giant robots). Varying degrees of style and coolness, from (imho) really quite silly Gundam to freaks-the-crap-out-of-you masterpiece Neon Genesis Evangelion.
4: Harem anime. One guy, house full of attractive girls, one of which he is mutually in love with and neither will admit it. Fan service for all.[1]
5: Historial\Fantasy: y'know. Samurai, demons, knights, stuff like that. Some of this stuff is quite good.
6: pr0n, known in the west as Hentai[2]. We won't go there.
7: Guns, cops, cool stuff, cyborgs, interesting plots. Guy anime
Those are the more prominent ones. In additon, almost all of them range in quality of artwork, plot, level of violence, humour and character depth. I'm a big fan of funny anime, and in that regard I'd recommend Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). It's about Ekichi Onizuka (22 years old and a Bachelor, ladies) an ex-leader of a Japanese biker gang who's decided to become a teacher. He's got a very... unorthodox style of teaching. He's a bit of a nutcase, very thick, but he has the respect of (most of) his students. He's also freaking hillarious
Basically, it depends what you're into. If you want conspiracy plots, we've got it. If you want cool action sequences, we've got it. If you want Japanese culture, we've got it. If you like ogling at cartoon boobies, well, we've got that too. There's an immense amount of variety.
Notes:
[1]"Fan service" means gratuitous scenes intended specifically to appeal to the male members of the audience. You'll know it when you see it.
[2]"Hentai" is only used by westerners to refer to anime pr0n. It literally translates into "perveted". The Japanese don't use this term (after all, we don't refer to pr0n as "perverted". You don't say "I'm going to an adult video store to hire some perversion." Well, if you do you're wierd )
Don't generalise. Spirited Away did extremely well, for an anime, gaining even mainstream appeal. Mind you, that's Studio Ghibli who are known for their excellent work.

Generalising would mean that say, only 4 out of 10 animes had stupid suckage in them. But it's a bit more like 9 out of 10. That's not a generalization, that's just statistical FACT.
Perfect Blue (What the hell is it with the color blue anyway? I can think of like 4 titles with the word blue in it. Does it mean something to them?) - Would've been great but the animators just couldn't resist a 5 minute long hentai scene.
Or, for example, the hugely popular 'big robot' shows.
I don't know about you, but I think I'll stick with the Japense doing nothing but making the electronics in big robots, and let the Americans arm them. If you were my defense contractor and you put a sword on ANYTHING, I'd beat your **** in with it.
Christ if you have this 'invincible metal' that can reflect lasers and such, you do realize how incredibly effective a ballistic cannon loaded with a shell of that crap would be? You could blast a country off the planet, pick it up, and reuse the shell. Hell I'd make sabots out of it and punch holes through enemy starships. Imagine a pressurized vacuum capable minigun...

The series is called TEXHNOLYZE, also of note is that Yoshitoshi ABe (sic) did the character designs for the series and is also along the same lines as Serial Experiments LAIN.
The Juno Reactor song is Guardian Angel and is used for the opening theme.
Appleseed 2004 will feature Basement Jaxx and Paul Oakenfold.
Naruto is BECOMING the Dragonball Z for subbed anime fans... Urgh... like... I was reading the manga and it was quite entertaining, then 2 years later the anime comes along and 20,000 idiots pop out of the wood work screaming "OMG! NARUTO! HAREM NO JUTSU!`!!~!~~"
*bangs head*
That's not to say it's a bad series, I just mean the manga far outweighs the anime. Speaking of which. For all you Neiji fans, the original symbol on his head was not a cross, but a swastika. Can't let that getting on TV can we?
I think everyone here has listed quite a few series already.
A classic series that will be making it's way to DVD very shortly is Hajime No Ippo. It's a boxing anime. Very very very very good series, but it's quite long. 76 eps I believe. So wait for that one
Another is Air Master. It hasn't been licensed yet, but essentially it's like Street Fighter, but with proper Street Fighting. For example there is a fight in the middle of a busy city intersection and down back alleys. I'd give that at least.... 6ish months before you see a DVD version.
A few series JUST coming out on DVD are:
Angelic Layer
Witch Hunter Robin
Last Exile
Heat Guy J
Angelic Layer is based off a Clamp (Creators of Card Captor Sakura, X) manga. Girls get little dolls, dress them up in battle fatigues and battle them in an a tiny arena (They are controlled via a headset). It's quite an interesting series. Superb fights. HIGHLY recommended.
Witch Hunter Robin has been desrcibed as the X-Files of the anime world. A small agency goes out and tracks down witches who have gone run amock. That's it really... guns, girls and a great story. Especially about half-way through the series where it all falls apart.
Last Exile. Studio Gonzo's 10th Anniversary Masterpiece. Think of it like... Laputa: Castle in the Sky's distant cousin... and it'll give you a fair idea of what to expect. Giant airships, some great CG work and excellent character designs.
Heat Guy J is just for the boys (Or I suppose girls who want a bit of bishi...) Large guns, large androids, cool plot. It's also vagggggueeeelllyyyy similar to Cowboy Bebop, or at least it was to me...
Hope that helps a bit....
