I read it somewhere at VALVe erc. Just can't remember the thread at the moment cause it isn't a big issue with anything other than NS because most of the popular mods are already supported by Steam--and easy to install. NS is the last popular mod that will need to be ported over. My thoughts are, WON will be alive till NS gets on steam just as the other popular mods such as CS, and DoD.
I'm awaiting information myself.
A few friends tell me it should be up for 2 or 3 more months because of some issues reguarding CS1.6.
Guess a big key indicator will be when we get that big update that steam asks for money.

WON was supposed to down early October, afaik. It's being pushed back and back because people are still using in decent amounts. CS 1.6 isn't a big hit with a lot of the "pro" 1.5 players, so they're sticking with it until it goes down... which may be a while if VALVe can't keep a date.

I don't really expect WON to be down for long time, there are just too many people who play it and love it. Once it does go down I don't think the number of people playing HL mods will ever be quite as high as they were in the haydays of WON. That is, until HL2 comes out of course.

The only services would be when you buy a game over Steam, in which case you download the game and have to pay a monthly fee. Otherwise, no, no paying. At all. IIUC(if i understand correctly), Sierra(/some company but not valve) owns the WON net, so they just gave valve the info... I imagine it would be like this: "We will shut down WON, but we will give you time to get a replacement. Do so now." And they make Steam. Which is really better than WON, except for the 56k unfriendliness. I think you can ask Talesin for a more detailed account on how extremely much worse WON was than Steam is now.
Cant they just wait for something significant to happen before they release steam?? I mean they could wait for NS, steam lan patch, HL2 etc not just some random day?

On top that they now also have a content delivery platform that VALVe can sell games over, thereby cutting out the middle man so they make even more £££.

Since most servers kick you if you enter spectator mode, this makes Yolt a problem.
I've had steam for about 2 months now and it is much less buggy than WON ever was, not to mention the built-in buddy tracker comes in handy all the time. Auto-updating is just icing on the cake.
i wouldn't say that steam is better than won, but steam isn't nearly as bad as it was when it was new, so far i still prefer won because you dont get steamed in the heat of battle with won.
