I'm Starting To Play Fallout 2

again, and again, and AGAIN
Being that I go to a school designed for creating game programmers, I tend to get a lot of flak when I haven't played a game that has been deemed as "classic" by the general populace.

Fallout 2 was one such game. So now that I have a crapload of free time for winter break I decided to start playing it this past wednesday. In the past 4 and a half days, I've started over 4 times because the character I was using just wasn't gonna work out when I started to understand the bigger picture.

Now, I've got a keeper character. But have encountered a weird bug and am wondering if I might have to start over for a 5th time.

The Bug: I slept with Miria in Mardoc and convinced her father that I was a doctor. Now none of the NPC's follow me around in cities. This wouldn't be so bad to go back and just not sleep with her, except that I saved over all my saves from before then except for 1 all the way back in Klamath. I didn't actually notice the NPC weirdness for a while, but later read about the bug online.

So, I was wondering. Is this such a crippling bug for those that have encountered it before ? Like does it seriously mess up any future missions ?

I was reading about unofficial patches and stuff from "No Mutants Allowed" but was wondering if anyone has actually tried them since I couldn't get a definitive read on whether the unofficial patches were "good" or not.

Meh, someone advise me on what I should do.

I think blowing up the sewer fixes that, but other wise npc aren't all that usefull IMO. any damage they do is offset by the fact that you can't burst everywere.

I think the original Fallout is a classic and Fallout 2 is just a good game that's a little too goofy.

Do you have the latest patch?

Incidently, don't bother with NPC's for the most part, because they are usually more annoying than they are useful.

Although they can help be good muels. The woman you can marry (whom I see you did ) makes a fair pack muel for my ammunition.

Not good for anything else though.

    Fallout: Tactics = Fallout 2?

If it doensn't, what is Fallout 2 like? I enjoyed the first one much, I always thought Tactics was the second.

Basically Fallout 2 is the sequel to Fallout 1 (duh ). The story from Fallout 1 continues, and your ancestor, the "Vault Dweller", founded a nice little village called Arroyo north of Vault 13 after having been expelled by the overseer. About 100 years pass, and your village is dieing because of children getting sick, starving Brahmins etc. Your only hope is an artefact called "GECK", which you have to search for all over the world. There isn?t any time limit this time though (except for 13 () years maybe) and you can team up with a variety of NPCs depending on your charisma, including humans, dogs, cyberdogs, a mutant and even a deathclaw. The basic concept remains the same though so this pretty much plays like Fallout 1, except for the fact that the world is 3 times bigger, lots of eastereggs can be found and there are a whole lot of new cities to explore.

Just tell me if you need some reviews for this game, I have some in stock.

    LIES

NPCs are VERY useful. They are meatshields and pack mules. You don't have to burst everywhere; I'm sure you've realized by now there are multiple viable ways to combat.** Plus the NPCs unlike Fallout1 are much more careful with their ranged weaponry. And there are very good snipers as well as stone skin meleers.

**Even melee / unarmed. But they are somewhat less effective. You can still beat the game without terrible headaches tho, except for, ah, unfortunate situations you've gotten yourself in.

Most people DO use NPCs. They have a wide variety of uses. They can provide amusement, fill in for lack of skills, are meatshields, distractions, some can be very good damage dealers, are most excellent mules, even if you get the, ah, other good mule. Plus some NPCs have special abilities.

Your wife, unfortunately, does not, except to fulfill a psychological need perhaps. I could never get her actually I always built a realistic character - except for charisma and luck.

Get the patch, the game becomes very difficult when you reach Valtcity/Geko for some reason pre patch the ghols living in Geko will attack you for no reason meaning you miss a hell of a lot of exp.

Id also recomend finding the unoffical patch that makes it possible to actualy get the holy hand gernade.

Still, dont play Fallout Tactics or Brotherhood of Steel, itl ruin your view of the Fallout universe.
  • elchinesetouristelchinesetourist Join Date: 2003-06-29 Member: 17775Members
agreed do NOT play the forthcoming Brotherhood of Steel.. for the console.

Unless you realize very firmly that, the people who make that "game" are not the same as the creators of the beloved original Fallouts. Nothing wrong with changing people except the game changes, and in this case the franchise is merely abused for an attempted quick buck..

Oh I almost forgot, if you liked Fallout then try Arcanium: Of Steamworks & Magick obscura.

It was made by the ORIGINAL developers of Fallout after they left interplay.

[WHO]Them: I recommend not marrying in Fallout 2 until your party is already at max capacity with characters you intend on keeping until the endgame. Whether it's a bug or not, the game doesn't look at your charisma stat to determine the max # of people your party can have when you marry or get a particular Fallout-1 related NPC through a special random encounter. This means that if you have a party with room for 1 person, you can get another normal NPC and then marry, but if you try to do it the other way around, you'll have to kick someone off the team to make room, and married NPCs will only leave your party by being dead.

Example with my character, charisma stat of 10: I can get 5 (if I haven't forgotten) normal NPCs, then marry and get this fallout-1 related character (in either order), making a total of 7 people in my party plus myself. If I meet a new NPC I want in my party, I'd have to kick out 2 of my current regular NPCs (bringing the total to 3 normal + married npc + FO1-related character = 5), kick out one more regular NPC party member to make 1 slot of room, and then recruit this new guy I met. From then on no matter how much I change my mind, I'll never be able to get 6 or 7 people in my party again.

I believe that Fallout 1 and 2 are two of the best games ever pumped out of the brilliant machine that was Black Isle studios. Fallout 2 is goofy? I didn't notice between the good story and powerarmor, but something I did notice was the humorous random encounters and plenty of techniques with which to win the game. I'm suprised you've had to restart, really- because I've managed to beat the game with most types of characters. From straight up thieves/pistol slingers to strong arms to acrobats.. anyway. I hope you really enjoy this game and I'm sorry to hear about the bug. I know that Black Isle released an official patch or two and that they can be downloaded at www.interplay.com . Also, I thought Fallout: Tactics was a good 2D Isometric tactical game with an interesting twist in combat and the ability to drive awesome post nuclear war humvees. If you don't like Fallout for its pace and just want to fight fight fight your way through a game, try tactics. There's not much at all to the story and the Roleplay elements are occasionally weak, but I found it to be enjoyable. As for Brotherhood of Steel, I'd bet that it won't be good but that doesn't mean I won't try it. Anything set in the post-apocolyptic Fallout setting that I know and love will be worth at least a rental. Who cares if complete and utter morons have gone to bring shame to the name, at least they didn't call it it Fallout 3..

If you look closely at Fallout 2 youll notice a lot of half finished content:

    SPOILER

In San Fransico at the dock there is a retina scanner that would let you acces a submarine for instance.

But it was still a great game.
Fallout Tactics was another attempt at making money.

Lets hope it fails, the faster Interplay shuts down the faster the Fallout Licence gets into good hands (prays for Troika).

Pjofsky: Fallout 2 was more similar to Fallout 1 than Fallout: Tactics was. Fallout: Tactics was a sort of blend between the Fallout universe and the gameplay styles of X-Com, Jagged Alliance, or the more recent Silent Storm and UFO: Aftermath. That's why critics gave FoT lower ratings for being less of a roleplaying game -- it wasn't so much about open-endedness and the wide expanses of the wastelands, it was about completing specified missions in a more linear order. [edit]Personally, because I enjoy the X-Com and Jagged Alliance series, I liked Tactics as much as FO1 and 2. I was playing just earlier today over network for the first time, and it reminded me that the game is quite good. The fact that I don't know of any other game in the genre with multiplayer support certainly helps it look even better.[/edit]

The official website for Fallout 2 is here. If you want to learn even more about it, I suggest clicking the links to either of the two large fansites I mentioned in my previous post about why Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel won't be as good as Fallout 1, 2, or Tactics.

Now that i think of it,Fallout 2 was incredibly buggy.

Sometimes NPCs would go nuts and just start shooting me.For no reason.

Once,i managed to drop some explosives into the crime-lord's pockets(it was the one where you can sleep with his wife),ran the hell out of the building,it goes off,and everyone starts shooting me.Like, how the hell did they know i put hte explosives in his pockets?

Theres also the **** part at the um...petrol station near the military base.....the ex-american army base....the guys in black power armor...yea that one...and the guy running the petrol staiton will not accept that im a new recruit....even htough i have max charisma and the related skills.I had to re-start the game to get him to accept that im a new recruit.

And the CAR....OMG THE CAR......THAT IS THE MOST BUGGY THING IN THE GAME.I cant count the number of times my car magically vanished when i came back for it,or the front part of the car vanished leaving only the storage-area at the back(floating in mid air o.O),or it runs out of fuel and for some reason i cant re-fuel it(it wouldnt let me use the fuel cells or whatever) or i bought the car, paid the money, then i cant use the car due to some weird **** bug.

I wish fallout 2 had more areas to explore....you know in the last part of the game,on the oil rig?Theres a part where you can actually see a reactor and a lift...but theres NO way to get that.....and a lot of other places....for example the gecko reactor?Theres some parts in there that you cant access too i think.Btw i think its **** that i used the terminal, got the bad guys to trace me,but i wait and wait and they dont show up.LAME.Other areas include the weird **** helicopter crash outside the mining town with the robot. You can pick up a keycard from one of the dead bodies, but ive never been able to find a use for it.

Fallout 2 was amazing. Here's 2 things I tried that worked better than you'd think.

One of my characters never used any ranged weapons. Hand to hand only. And he never accepted anyone into the party. Just him and his fists against pretty much anything, and he almost much always won easily. There were a few enemies this didn't work so well for, but with high enough skill and luck to get a fair amount of targeted criticals, you'd be suprized. A couple of critical punches to the eyes even took down a fair share of super mutants and such.

The other one I tried but never got around to finishing was a girl with 10 luck. Even the other stats hurting, you can be highly effective with amazing luck.

Basicly, do your best to avoid the bugs, and Fallout 2 can be one of the best games you've ever played if you decide to be creative.
