<div class="IPBDescription">They want to license my friends games</div> Hey this post is typed for my room mate Kain-TSA who is an avid NS gamer but doesnt have a forum account.

-------

Hey anyone of you guys heard about the new Phantom gaming Console coming out?

I read an article about it here <a href='http://www.hostingtech.com/news/2003/7/24/St_Nitf_Phantom_tm_Game_Console_Unveil_p0723046.1rw.html' target='_blank'>http://www.hostingtech.com/news/2003/7/24/...723046.1rw.html</a>

and now you can go watch its unveiling trailer at its new site here
<a href='http://www.phantom.net/' target='_blank'>http://www.phantom.net/</a>

Uses some MS technology, i saw a windows sign in the video,

Anyways,
If anyone has ever seen my friend Kain-TSA[e] in any servers, he makes his own PC games. He does the models, animations, sounds, coding everypart all by himself and then publishes them in stores. He makes "bargin bin type games" but has some new concepts added in to make old games have a new twist. And recently static gamer has asked to review his stuff etc.

Anyways the people over at Phantom have recently sent him an offical offer for "Licensing" some of his titles and then to go and basically overhaul some of his ideas to make them all good looking for the top of the line graphics etc.

I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this Phantom console and if it was for real or not.

Thanks guys

The Phantom is going to suck. Normally I'd say "wait for the games!" but I don't need to.

    Its going to suck.
Its going to make the N-Gage's sakes numbers look the Playstation's numbers.
Christ, the CD-i was a better idea for a console.

    For the uninformed:
The Phantom is a linux powered game console, 8x as big as the Xbox (2 times bigger on all fronts). Its been in development forever.

The system REQUIRES broadband. It has an xDSL and Cable modem BUILT IN. You buy games and download them to a hard drive to play them.

How stupid is this? First, you'are increasing the cost dramatically by including not 1, but 2 modems in the box.
Second, broadband is growing, but its not as wide spread as dial up.
Third, broadbands speeds, unless you're on a fat pipe, top out at about 500 k/s for Cable and xDSL. Assuming Phantom can secure lightning fast content servers, its still gonna be annoying downloading full games. And what are the odds of it going as fast as possible?
Remeber how much trouble steam had serving content at launch? Imagine that times 10.

This has been your warning. Do not even LOOK at the Phantom!

    I don't know what the <a href='http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2003-01-22&res=l' target='_blank'>developers</a> of the Phantom were thinking, but it will be just <a href='http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2003-08-20&res=l' target='_blank'>another failed system</a> by a lesser-known company.

Isn't this the console where the company developing it's office was like, an empty warehouse?

Ok, I'm with PA on this one. After having gone to the official site, and watched the "preview video", that by the way showed ZERO gameplay or indeed, zero pictures of the actual console, I have concluded that <b>this console does not exist</b>

Yeah. It was supposed to be a Linux gaming machine but that got tossed because Linux as far as I know isn't embedded yet...

Anyway I hate this machine. Here's why.

    1.)Uber expensive
    2.)All games are p2p
3.)You buy games via the p2p.
4.)Games are downloaded, which you pay for.
    5.)PAY TO PLAY

    I like this about it

    1.)Nice color

Personally I like being robbed of my hard earned money by fake companies. I'LL TAKE TEN!

Anyway, if Kain is reading I would advise him not to let them touch a SHRED of his property.. and to infact burn them. With some kind of witty remark.. like.. "Oh yeah..your console is the sucks." Ouch. That's got to hurt, eh? Eh?

Don't you just pay to download the games then thats it?

You pay to buy games for any other console so why should this be different?

FYI, Linux has been running in embeded systems for quite some time. There is probably some info about it <a href='http://www.linuxdevices.com/' target='_blank'>here</a>, but it's 5:00am here so I'm not going to bother to check on that. Some freaks evven ported it to a coffe machine like 3 years ago IIRC.

Just by looking at the damn thing I can tell you'll need a forklift to move the console and hand carts to move the controllers.

well the greedy me would just consider this if it's well paid, then just happen to add in subliminal messages of how the Phantom sucks in it.

My thoughts. By the time it's going to be released it will be underpowered and over priced. Plus no doubt suffer from poor software support as no major publishers have expressed any interest at this point.
While it could use Existing PC games it's unlikely many would be happy with infinium changing them into the phantoms own format and making them available via download due to piracy issues. (The phantom has no external media drives such as CD or DVD rom)
