Did they re edit the new scenes?
b/c I remember watching the origional version of ALIENS with all the deleted scenes that were cut from the theatrical release.
They were just thrown back in there and not edited thus leaving way from nasty cut scenes that did not even flow together and one occasion the characters script was even stated 2x. One from the edited verison and right before from the inclusion of a cut scene.

Nine discs. Let me say that again just for emphasis: <i>nine</i> discs. Two versions of <i>each</i> movie. Over <i>thirty</i> hours of special features. Not to mention previously unseen footage in the form of pictures, sketches and various other goodies. I just watched production featurettes of <i>Alien</i> and <i>Aliens</i>, and they were longer than the movies themselves.
Not to mention that, they actually delve quite deep into the making of the films, and actually admit that there were, at times, problems, and that the production wasn't as smooth as most small 30 minute "documentaries" lead on to believe. Instead of praising each and everyone who worked on the movie, the makers are allowed to speak much more freely than usual.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->What're on the other discs anyway? I'm guessing A LOT of bonus material, but like what? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
For each movie there's a special disk full of bonus material. There are production featurettes that consist of interviews, old and new, and there are lots of pictures taken during the actual production. It's great to hear the makers interviewed several years afte the actual movie was finished, to see what they think of it now, and how they remember the production as. The ninth disc has some specials on all of the four movies, including trailers and TV spots.

Well, of <i>Aliens</i>, there are two version. The original theatrical release from 1986, and a new director's cut, which changes the movie quite drastically, being roughly 20 minutes longer. The thing is, the director's cut has been available on DVD before, but now one can watch both versions. Personally, I like the theatrical release, because it doesn't show the colony until the marines arrive. Showing Newt's dad getting intimate with a facehugger just seems to destroy a lot of the tension.
Oh, did I mention the commentary tracks yet?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->hey Monse, can you let us know what the extended edition versions of Alien 3 and Resurrection are like? Those two movies really didn't do much for me. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<i>Alien: Resurrection's</i> director's cut is nearly identical to the theatrical release. The start is slightly changed (if I recall correctly, it's been quite a while since the original version), and the ending dialogue takes place on Earth, not on the ship. Not much changed in that movie. <i>Alien 3's</i> special edition, while not really done by David Fincher, is a lot longer than the theatrical release, and, in my opinion, works much better than the theatrical release. The problem is that it's really based on some production notes and a vague idea of what kind of David Fincher would've wanted to make.

If you watch the Aliens Director's Cut with audio commentary (or a few of the featurettes on Disk 4) you find that they cut an entire reel simply to shorten the movie length. Cameron really wanted the other stuff in there, and after watching both versions for a few years, I think it helps build more rising tension. Ditto the sentry guns scenes - too many movies try to bury you in continuous action, this one really tried to give you a rollercoaster alternative. Plus the audio commentary by Bill Paxton is so completely hilarious that I almost fell out of my chair.
I can't highly recommend the series enough if you're an Alien fan like myself. Hell, they have the original friggin' Dan O'bannon Alien script! ("Star Beast" - OMG lame title!) and the original James Cameron treatment that becames Aliens. The documentaries alone are worth the money. The digitally remastered director's cuts alone are worth it. The storyboards and concept art alone are worth it. The audiocommentary and interviews are worth it. The endless explanation of the Alien/Aliens special effects (pre-CGI mind you) are worth it. The whole set is a bargain at any price.
As for the movies being old - you're so right! Because there's no way Citizen Kane, Star Wars, Bridge over the River Kwai, or thousands of movies made before you were born are any good. How could they be? You should totally not use a TV or phone either, those are sooooo before you were born. Oh, and pretty much all music written ever - who wants to hear that old stuff???
