Odd Lagging/freezing

This is really bugging me...
Hey folks,

I had to change from win 2000 to WinXP for some odd reasons.
However, ever since the change, something odd's happening in NS (or any HL mod for that matter)

Every 20 seconds or so, there seems to be lag so my client freezes for 1-1/2 sec and then resumes normal play. This is incredibly frustrating as you might understand as everytime I enter a firefight i'm bound to go down in my frozen state.

My specs are:

proc: 2,4 ghz intel
512 MB RAM

videocard: Radeon 9700 Pro
graphics mode: OpenGL, (resolytion doesn't matter, same thing happens no matter what res.)
soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy 2

Half-life: original retail

connection: ADSL

I've never had problems with my connection however, so I don't think the problem lies there, and i've also got another comp playing HL mods fine on the same connection without the skips (tho in win 2000), so i figure the problem lies with the O/S being WinXP... Is there some setting I have overlooked? I would be really thankful if I could get this fixed as I've been playing NS since the first release and have evolved into an addict, and now i just can't get my fix....

Is the built-in firewall in xp on?
Are you using a NAT (router)?
Are you using some 3rd party FW like Norton Internet Security or Zone Alarm?

    hmm
afraid i don't [EDIT: bring] good news... i started getting the same problem right after installing a new HDD... my new HDD ran full speed but games running off my primary would freeze up every few secs, no matter what game i played or what i had running in the background
the only way i got rid of this problem was by formatting my HDD and reinstalling windows...
i'm guessing it's caused by winXP doing something naughty with the HDD drivers or somesuch

I checked the built-in XP firewall, and that was on, but the problem persists even after I turned it off.

So, i've got a wireless network with a 3com router with a built in firewall, but this was not a problem before my reinstall, and other computers work fine over the same connection, so I reckon it's either the game (half-life, not NS) or the OS.
